How Alabama golfers fared in the 2024 PGA Tour season

The 2024 PGA Tour season wrapped up this past weekend with Scottie Scheffler capping his historic season with a Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title. Here's how the Crimson Tide players on tour fared this past season

Justin Thomas:
Wins: 0
FedEx Cup finish: T14
Earnings: $4,475,561

JT's up-and-down season, with highs and lows, is indicative of where he is in his career right now. Thomas was the final player to sneak into the Tour Championship as the No. 30 ranked player in the field. He had a strong showing at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, which was his only top-10 in a major championship this season.

Nick Dunlap:
Wins: 2
FedEx Cup finish: 49
Earnings: $2,878,325

Not a bad season for the 20-year-old! One of the most promising young talents on tour, Dunlap left Tuscaloosa in January after becoming the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991; he'd be working on the first semester of his junior year at UA if he didnt win! After delivering an impressive performance in Memphis at St. Jude as the youngest player in the field, he secured a spot in the BMW Championship. He could be the next non-major winner to make a breakthrough; this was his first time playing the Masters and PGA Championship, but he didn't qualify for The Open. If he continues his upward trajectory, there is a real chance of Dunlap being a potential captain's pick at the 2025 Ryder Cup, given his strong matchplay skills demonstrated during his two years at Alabama.

Lee Hodges:
Wins: 0
FedEx Cup finish: 79
Earnings: $1,799,907

After securing a breakthrough win at the 2023 3M Open in Minnesota, Hodges was unable to maintain that momentum throughout the following season. Hodges had a decent stretch in May, including a top-15 finish at Valhalla, but did not achieve anything particularly noteworthy. Fortunately, the 29-year-old's victory in 2023 gives him an exemption for one more season on tour, making 2025 a crucial year for his career.

Sense of Community

I grew up on, and again live on, the West Coast. That said, I have lived all over the US, including two stops in Nashville and Huntsville (where I met my wife), and have experienced a lot of local cultures, both good and challenging.

I'm a frequent contributor (doesn't mean a good or respected one) to my alma mater's sports forums. I've only recently joined this forum, and I'm amazed. Lots of great insights and the like, but it's different. So far, there have been two posts on injured HS quarterbacks asking for prayers of support; one not even from Alabama. Then there was the beautiful post with the team playing with 10-year-old fan Suzannah. So heartwarming and real. . . . .

In late June, we were here for Bama Bound. Before we headed to Tuscaloosa, we spent a night in Birmingham, as shopping was a priority. Though it was late, my daughter loves going for drives, and she asked to drive around Mountain Brook. So we spent an hour or so driving all the streets and looking at the homes. We noticed and were puzzled by all purple bows and ribbons adorning most of the mailboxes. A couple of days later, we learned that they were in tribute to, and support for, Lulu from Mountain Brook who had lost so much from a shark attack a week or so prior. Wonderful for us to see such community support.

The sense of community here is great. The sense of community in Alabama is great. The South, and Alabama in particular, is a different world. Great to be a part of it, again. Even better that my daughter is a part of it now, as well. She's loving it.

Football 🏈 PFF notebook: What the numbers say about Alabama's opening win

Alabama’s season-opening win over Western Kentucky wasn’t as perfect as the 63-0 scoreline indicates. However, it’s hard to argue with the Crimson Tide’s efficiency on the day.

Alabama’s big-play offense piled up 600 yards while scoring six times from 20 or more yards out. Meanwhile, the Tide’s resilient defense kept the Hilltoppers off the scoreboard while holding them to 145 yards and just 10 first downs.

“Never going to be perfect and a lot of things we can work on, but I appreciate just where we're at right now,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said during his Monday press conference. “It just kind of tells us where we're at and what we need to be taking to the practice field here this week.”

Before we turn the page to No. 4 Alabama’s Week 2 game against South Florida this week, here’s a look at the Tide’s season-opening performance through the lens of Pro Football Focus.

Football Recruiting Note on Alabama Wolf commit

Four-star Alabama LB commit Dawson Merritt will take a visit to Nebraska this weekend for the Cornhuskers game against Colorado. Merrit committed to Alabama over Nebraska over the summer.

It was a very close race between Alabama and Nebraska for Merritt's services. He is a big fan of the Wolf role coached by Christian Robinson but it appears there is still communication between Merritt and the Nebraska staff. Will look into if he's set any plans for a trip to Tuscaloosa.
