November 12, 1960, Alabama was trailing Tech 15-13. Alabama had the ball inside the Tech 20, with seconds to play, Alabama’s great kicker, Tommy Booker was injured, Coach Bryant called on a tackle-end that had been a high school kicker for, at the time the most famous field goal in Bama history. On to the field came Richard “Digger” O’Dell, and with one kick he became immortal in Bama Football History.
It would be easy to name an All American, but today I list the late Richard “Digger” O’Dell. The day he played end and he did not wear #71.
