Alabama loses 72-68 to Iona

Alabama has only taken less than 20 threes in a game twice since Oats has been here. Both times against Rick Pitino and Iona.

Rick is the best in-game coach in the country and one of the best defensive coaches of all-time. They’ll be ranked next week. Lets not act like we shouldn’t have ever lost to them. They’re a dang good mid major. Drake is the #3 mid major in the country as well. Need to bounce back
Pitino used his timeouts to stop any resemblance of a momentum swing

Other thing Iona had a summer trip to Greece that allowed their team a headstart for this season... playing summer games coached by Pitino was a huge asset for that team

You are sugar coating again. Iona ranked next week? Doubtful. Explain why Bama only had 7 assists?

And Oats never uses his time outs to stop another team’s run. Ever. Hard to understand.

Not last night. 7 total assists. That is incredible.
Sure, but that’s not Quinerly being selfish. That’s a problem with a lack of purposeful movement and no ability to knock down shots last night. I promise you any time a big man screens and rolls with any purpose at all Q is going to dump it off to him. Calling Quinerly selfish is just a bad take. Shack, however, has always been and will always be a selfish player.

Mainly a 6-0 record with a win against a top 10 team and a projection to win their conference? Also coming off an NCAA tournament appearance. You’re better than this Pwest
Have you seen Iona’s schedule before playing Alabama? They had played no one. Yes/ they have some transfers that have come in and Pitino can still coach. But that is not a game Alabama should have remotely lost.
And Alabama is not a top 10 team- teams that are do not lose to Iona.

Yeah not an impressive schedule, although Liberty and Harvard are both solid. No one here is claiming they’re world beaters, and we definitely should’ve one that game… but to say Iona is mediocre is just wrong.

I agree on Coach Oats not calling timeouts to stop a run. Similar to Saban watching the 1st half clock run out and costing us a chance to score after getting a stop on D. We get it back and don't have enough time even with our timeouts still in our pockets so we run it and go to the half.

Ellis has to have more than 3 shots in a game. Quinnerly took 14 I believe and there was too much dribbling and no ball movement.

Agree on Ellis. But that’s not a result of Q being selfish. The only… and I mean the only reason our offense ever had amy flow is because of Jahvon Quinerly.

No/ it is just that Bama will be playing 4-5 teams coming up that are light years ahead of Iona.
Athletically maybe. But not coaching. We just faced the best coach we'll see all season. Pitino had those guys ready to play, and his in-game adjustments/strategy out coached Oats by a mile. But as I said in a previous post there's no shame in that. Pitino is a Hall of Fame coach, while Oats is only 8 years removed from coaching high school basketball.

Agree Oats was badly out coached. And Oats
Better get better before facing Baylor and Gonzaga- which are losses no matter how well Bama plays.

The free throw shooting is just my pet peeve- hate losing due to that mainly.

It better get better today. This Drake team is no slouch. Play as poorly as we did yesterday, and we can get beat. Hopefully yesterday was a wake up call, as I thought our performance (players & coaches) was very lackluster.

Also worth mentioning, this teams half court offense is abysmal. It shouldn’t be the case that we can only score in transition. Do we ever run any baseline screens to get shooters open? Seems like we run 95% isolation with maybe a pick and roll mixed in 5% of the time

Come on man. Iona is far from mediocre.
They will probably win their conference, but it’s a very weak league. Before last night no team from that conference had ever defeated a top 10 team, with their all time record being 0-119. I don’t think Iona would finish in the top 7 of the SEC. They’ll make the big dance by winning their league, but will be seeded somewhere between 12 and 15. That would put them somewhere between 45 and 60 in the country. That is mediocre by my definition. You may define mediocrity differently than I do.

And before last year that conference never had a coach the caliber of Rick Pitino. Wouldn't be surprised to see them get by Belmont today, and give Kansas all they want in the Finals on Sunday.

I expect them to beat Belmont. The least talented LSU team in years routed Belmont by 30 points a few days ago. I also think Kansas will beat Iona by 15+ in the finals.

Important thing is that we leave this tournament with 2 wins. Need to be 6-1 going into Gonzaga
We shouldn’t have much trouble with Drake. They were very unimpressive last night. Slow and not very athletic. A win would set up a game with Miami Sunday. Miami looked awful against a bad Dayton team yesterday. If we lose either of the next 2 it may be a long season.

Even if we were to lose the next 2 games in this tournament, I'm not going to put that much emphasis on games this early in the season. We have a lot of new faces contributing who are still trying to find their way in this system. Primarily Davison, Gurley, and Bediako.

Geez man step back from the ledge. It's the 5th game of the season. Anybody who thought this team was going to replicate last year's regular season success was delusional. Tonight was a payback game for Iona and we got the entire SEC waiting to pay us back for last year as well. Take your lumps, learn and gel while playing hard, and get 17-18 wins and make the tournament. There have been plenty of 19-20 win seasons where Bama got left at home. 16 wins against this schedule will probably get them in too.

No ledge dude. Just stating facts. This team was suppose to beat Iona. Just stating the obvious.

Not sure where Iona will be ranked this week, but it won’t be in the top 25. They just got it handed to them by a Belmont team that lost by 30 to LSU.

Pitino must’ve set up his guys with hookers last night to celebrate their big win like he used to do at Louisville. Glad to see that sleaze ball lose.

Bad Dayton team just beat Kansas.

In my opinion, timeouts are overrated and only good for 1. Rest, 2. Setting your defense or 3. Calling a set play. Some coaches run plays and others run an offense. CNO runs an offense and has the philosophy of Phil Jackson and lets the game flow Naturally. I like his philosophy of allowing the players to figure out a way stop runs and create momentum. He’s not a control freak and allows his players to think and grow to the detriment of some fans sanity.

This fanbase is hilarious. Thank you all for the good laughs and interactions!

What I’ve gathered so far is: A good team can never lose to a team they’re better than, a team has lost games before they’re even played, and a team that has won their conference multiple times recently and with a HOF coach is mediocre!

It’s pretty incredible actually.

It's pretty comical. I had someone text me during the game last night that we weren't any good. Same person also threw a tantrum after me saying Herb was the MVP of our team last year, and now he's one of the best defenders in the NBA.

Some people just don't have a clue.

At the end of the day I’m just thankful we have so many people who are passionate about Bama hoops… but it can be frustrating some of the takes…
