Don't understand why people are saying this. No he is not a phenom and has played rather stupid at times but he would probably be the best player on the team next season at the most important position.

We definitely need him yo return but he also needs to return because he is no where near as skilled as Sexton was as a freshman and that didnt even translate to success in the NBA. JD is raw and powerful but lacks finesse and shot making skills, plus confidence at times.
He needs work regardless as to whether it's another year in college or an NBA farm team. His major drawback for me is "decision-making." Constantly dribbling into trouble, jumping in the air with no plan, and that 4 seconds on the clock debacle should become part of a training film on what not to do.
Sexton didn't translate to success in the NBA? He averaged 24 points and 4 assists last year on very high shooting percentages. He will be getting a contract worth 18-25M a year this offseason.
What do you consider success in the NBA to mean? Sexton is highly regarded and is doing great there.

He also has some NIL money. Imo if he’s on the fringe of first second round there’s a strong case to be made for staying in school.
As of right now, Potential has not happen nor lived up to by Davidson. I wish the guy the best but if one wants to compare him to Sexton, Sexton in my opinion was a true 5 star and Davidson maybe a middle of the road 3.

The more minutes he gets, the wider our opponent's differential grows-- lately it seems. Not sure about Gary or others in our productive earlier rotations, but we are much better when Davison plays between 20 and 25. Can't understand having him on the court 30+ min with his current production. Looks like he played 37 Saturday? Oats finds every opportunity to call out or address others. He needs to take a hard look at some very obvious long stretches of poor play with jd on the floor.
Primo could shoot and play defense. JD does neither at this point.
I think the issue is the hype led us to think we were getting Collin sexton at worst. If he had been a 4 star that was a projected 4 year guy we would all be thrilled about his potential right now. But we were all hearing elite elite elite, lotto pick etc etc etc.

I don't care what his star rating was (5, 4, or 3) with his turnovers and lack of execution on defense, I'd still be upset. Putting him in the same conversation as Sexton is a huge disservice to Collin. There were stretches where he literally put the team on his back and carried them to wins.
JD is an amazing athlete, but far from an elite basketball player IMO, but what do I know as I see he's still projected as bottom of the first round pick.

He dropped 8 points on average through only 11 games from last years total and only 21% from 3........but i actually like Sexton much more than Davidson which was my point! I have a really hard time thinking anyone will tell JD he should go pro this year!

Any Bama fan should know Collin has been anything but a failure so far in his career…he was already selected to the Rising Stars and was being pushed as an All Star selection last year in just his third year. Hell, even your “dig” of being a poor man’s Russell Westbrook is weird…Russ is an eight time All Star and a former MVP of the league.
I hope JD comes back for a second year and continues to work on all aspects of his game. The one aspect of his game that I always appreciate is his effort. The results are not always there but the effort is.
Without him, I don't think we win that Zags game or vs the Coogs. The kid made some plays in those games with his raw athleticism that no other player on our team could have made.

IMO, it would be to his benefit to come back, but I do not know his station in life. To say he has things he needs to work on would be an understatement. Either way, I wish him success.

Injury prone?? This is Collin's first injury that he has ever missed more than 2 weeks for in his career. He was actually known as the opposite until this freak injury ended his year. He missed a grand total of 0 games in his first 2 years due to injury. The internet can be a terrible place because it gives people a voice who know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about.
Also they did not draft the same position. They moved Collin over to shooting guard, which is his more natural fit since he is a score-first guard.

They were experimenting with playing him almost exclusively off ball with everything going through Garland and he was having a hard time adjusting at first. For his career he is shooting 38% from 3.
Well JD id most definitely getting drafted, so there is that. No matter what some of you guys think about his game, he has a good impact on the game when he plays. He still does freshman type things including turnovers, clock management and playing in your face defense the whole game. He does however get to the basket almost every time he wants to, also rebounds well and is improving his 3 point shot. He has really improved his defense during the regular season as well.
No question. But also, he can’t help the hype all the fans and scouts built up. If he were just viewed as a solid recruit rather than a freak 5 star pg we would all be pleased with his season.

Russ will go down as the biggest ball hog in NBA history not up for debate! And Sexton plays hard and is a good energy guy but is not a good enough shooter to consistently be a starter in the NBA! He will eventually start coming off the bench watch and see!🤷♂️🤷♂️
Can't shoot the 3? Shooting 38% in his career. Devin Booker and Trae Young both shoot 35% from 3 in their career. So Garland replaced him yet they both started together and played over 30 minutes together? The pacers trade for Levert was to give them a scoring 2 guard that they are sorely missing thanks to Sexton being out and they are making an unexpected playoff push. Not sure what else to say to your “he can’t shoot” besides go look at the numbers that prove pretty clearly he can shoot.

He was averaging 16pg before getting injured and was hitting 49% of his shots. He was hitting 24% from three early this year but even Steph went though a stretch this year where he was hitting in the 20s. No question his numbers would have balanced out as the season went on.
You know who else is a 6'1 shooting guard? Donovan Mitchell, All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Sexton is a career 38% three point shooter. Sexton average 24ppg last year and played like 10 games this year before getting hurt.
Sexton and Garland started together, he wasn't a replacement. They looked at what Portland was going with Dame and CJ and figured they could do the same. Garland isn't a replacement, he was drafted to be a compliment.
I am far from being a poster who think all players who left Alabama is great. Nor I am willing to take up for a player just because he played at Bama. But Sexton is a very good young basketball player and his career was on a trajectory that would have landed him as a All-Star sooner rather than later.

JD was just a product of his environment. Super athletic which is why he dominated high school. AAU ball now are like all star games with little defense, so JD thrived there too. I think he can be a hell of the player if he starts seeing the floor better and cuts out the dumb turnovers
