Don't understand why people are saying this. No he is not a phenom and has played rather stupid at times but he would probably be the best player on the team next season at the most important position.

JD was just a product of his environment. Super athletic which is why he dominated high school. AAU ball now are like all star games with little defense, so JD thrived there too. I think he can be a hell of the player if he starts seeing the floor better and cuts out the dumb turnovers

This!!! Finally someone mentioned it. The kid has never really had to play defense before. He absolutely dominated in high school and we all know what AAU ball looks like. He had so much to learn when he got on campus, it must have been overwhelming. You could almost see it on his face sometimes. I really hope he comes back to school bc he’s got a lot to work on and he’d be a great returning piece for next year. I don’t know what his home situation is like so I have no idea what he’ll do. Best of luck to the kid no matter what he chooses.

I don't care what his star rating was (5, 4, or 3) with his turnovers and lack of execution on defense, I'd still be upset. Putting him in the same conversation as Sexton is a huge disservice to Collin. There were stretches where he literally put the team on his back and carried them to wins.

JD is an amazing athlete, but far from an elite basketball player IMO, but what do I know as I see he's still projected as bottom of the first round pick.

JD is clearly not a great ball handler yet. He isn't the best outside shooter yet. But you can't coach his level of athleticism. He's a small school phenom who needs more development. Does he need to come back, or will an NBA team risk a pick just on his potential? I don't know. I hope he comes back and improves his game with US rather than moves on. We can get him some more NIL money, so he's not going to be broke.

That said, if he gets a great NBA contract, I would hardly blame him for taking it.
