How many have we taken this year? Compared to last? I watch every game and can’t remember seeing one hardly

They are few and far in between. It's something that Oats should be emphasizing. Teams make a living driving on us.
Also think Herb covered up a lot of defensive deficiency last year. He slid in there to take charges when our guards would get beat, this year no one is stepping up.

This ^^^
Herb was a master at taking the charge. These guys, except for Rojas, are either scared or don't want the bumps and bruises that comes with it.

They really need to extend the restricted area. So often the offensive player leaves his feet before the defender is set then doesn’t have a place to land and the defense gets the call. The worst is when the offensive players isn’t even moving directly into the defender. I think JQ got burned on one of those yesterday.

a lot about the way games are officiated needs to be looked at. Defenders are regularly getting away with having 2 hands on the dribbler but calls are a complete flip of the coin around the rim.

There was at least 2 charging calls against Bama yesterday that weren't charging. Should have been called blocking. Refs are really geared up to call charging.

I was a BB ref several years ago. The system we used was when the offensive player picks up his last dribble and is making a move to the basket, if the defensive moved at all, it was called a block, hence a foul on the defensive player. Tough to call without watching both players motions. Lots of offensive fouls called in recent times are actually blocking fouls. Refs also get caught up in the moment, especially for certain teams.

Thanks for the explanation. They also have to watch the arc to see if the defender is in or out. Two other calls that go unchecked too often are the moving screen (which sometimes resembles a pulling guard) and 3 seconds in the lane.

You have to actually be in front of the player driving to take a charge. Getting caught in a chase situation or not switching could be a cause.
