I know this is preached but Coleman Coliseum is so ugly, even more so on TV. Lighting is awful and our whole lower crowd is empty outside of the students.

Overall just such a bad basketball environment.

I’d rather have an arena that holds 6,000 and not a seat empty.

The seats are really bad. I am not a giant, but my 6 ft frame doesn't fit, my knees ache from hitting the seat in front of me.

I do donate. Our funds have been mishandled and continue to be placed in an old arena that provides very little in home court advantage. It has an outstanding practice arena, but that is where it stops. Oats has been promised a new arena as was Avery. It needs to happen. Miss State has just updated its arena for 37.5 million. I am as big Alabama basketball fan you will find. If you don’t understand that Coleman is not a good arena, then I can’t help you.

Listen it has nothing to do with the seating or the lighting! Hell BDS has new fancy lights and is always packed and it doesnt scare anyone either! Why is that? Because both BDS and Coleman are filled with a bunch of old ass fans that sit with their arms crossed like they are church! The atmosphere won't change until the average age of the fanbase changes! You look around the stands at LSU and Auburn and the average age is colser to 40 and in Tuscaloosa its closer to 60! 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I'm still of the opinion that Coleman isn't as bad as some think it is. But I do think it needs a lot of help to be what it maybe could be. The cost of such a dramatic remodel being at least 3/4 the cost of a new arena just makes building a new arena make more sense.

I'm a little concerned that we've heard basically nothing about the new arena since inflation really kicked into everything. Our timing basically sucks. If we're talking about it 4 years ago then we're likely opening that arena this season for what would be half or less of what we'll pay. A $100 million arena just a few years ago would probably be twice that today or more.

My hope is the delay gives fans another season to show their interest so maybe the possible capacity gets bumped up a couple thousand. It should be encouraging to see relatively big crowds to start this season against teams that aren't big time names. Not too long ago those games wouldn't have had 3000 butts in seats.

Ok Lets try this. No Tide Pride donations ,no tickets for us old guys that have had season tickets for 40 plus years not to mention all those games at Foster Auditorium we went to as kids . Fill it up with 15,000 students . Really, i am OK with this IF the students would show up. They might and it would be a great atmosphere. UA has plenty of $ $ and wouldn't miss my $1,300. I think this would only half way fill it up though. A new smaller facility will probably cause me to lose my seats or price me out. As long as Colemen has the games, I plan to be there and make almost as much noise as I did when I was 15 in Fosters. I would like to see one Bama team in person that makes it to the Final 4. RTR.

The cost today, just in building materials alone, would be more than 3x what they were a few yrs ago, throw in much higher labor costs, and only a fool would do any project, presently, that is not an absolute must. Now that doesn’t mean they can’t draw up plans, determine sites, etc, but wait until the prices, HOPEFULLY, come back down to earth before you embark on such a project. HOPEFULLY, this bubble bursts big very soon, and then we will be in a much better environment to proceed. Like xcop stated above, there are a few minor things we could do, in the meantime, to potentially help the situation. We can all complain we should have done it sooner, but there is nothing we can do about the past, so we just have no choice but to proceed in the best way for the future. That may not be what people want to hear, but it is the most prudent action in these times.

I think some are missing the point. Coleman isn’t set up for a basketball arena which hurts the atmosphere a great amount. Coleman is a sports venue.

We need a dedicated space for basketball that looks and feels like a arena. Bowl like shape.

I sat in Coleman in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. We were winning big time and the place was jammed packed, if we start winning big time again the joint will start filling up and it will “ONCE AGAIN” become a tuff place to win.

I am not advocating to not build a new arena because a new place would be great, but in the meantime let’s start winning consistently and watch the place fill up again.

ROLL TIDE!!!!

You all make good points, but here is the issue. Coleman may have been a good arena 50 years ago, but it is not now. Can it be updated to be a nice arena? Absolutely. The mock ups they did for Avery looked great. If we don’t do a new arena, Oats will be pissed. He doesn’t want to play in Birmingham for 2 years. It will hurt recruiting and make us lose the student’s noise.

Now let‘s compare Auburn’s arena to ours. Look how close the fans and especially the students are. You have the court and immediately seats. The crowd goes straight up from there, and then an upper deck to get more fans closer. Adding a lower ceiling and it really keeps it loud. Oats said it is a really tough environment when you have a student yelling awful things in your ear a foot away from you.

Here’s ours. We literally have fans facing fans. We yell at one another and not at the court.

Now look how far away our crowd is from the coaches benches. It’s roughly 10-15 from the court.

There is nothing to do except lower the court and move seats in and make an upper deck that brings the fans closer. It is truly and outdated monster that needs to explode. Just my opinion, but they need to fix it or build a new one. Costs are not coming down any time soon.

I agree. BAMA could have a 9000 seat 50 million dollar arena and if they are 2-4 in conference play you're still going to struggle to get a good crowd for an 8:00 pm Tuesday night tip against South Carolina.

Well, I hope the part about costs not coming down anytime soon doesn’t end up correct, because if so, then we all are going to have a lot bigger issues to worry about than a new BB arena.

Now you have to pay $20 for a burger and drink too?? I heard the beer was outrageous as well
$10.99 for Dos Equis 16 oz and $9.99 for Michelob Ultra. They have White Claw for the ladies, but I never saw a price. I have no problem with someone making a profit, but the $44.00 I spend on 64 oz of Dos Equis each game makes me wish I hit the chronic rather than drink beer.

On occasion I have been out to watch the Legion play and the last time I went I got that same size Dos Equis for $6.00.

ROLL TIDE!!!!

Yea, I thought, for financial reasons, I would only have to sneak mini’s into the game when I was a poor college student. How little I knew.

I totally agree about the seating configuration in Coleman. It's because the design was multipurpose at some point in time and costs always outweighed common sense to adjust it. Mal really fumbled the lipstick job in the 2000s when they could have done a proper rearrangement of the seating area. Instead they focused on admin offices, locker rooms, and opening it up a bit in the walking areas. Which was a dramatic improvement but not near enough.

I've always questioned both Coleman and Bryant-Denny because not only do the sideline seats start absurdly far from the playing field but it's made worse by the 70s era movie theater incline where 10 rows up is effectively the same distance from the playing surface as row 35 in an arena made for that sport. It is stupid that my row 22 seats when I had season tickets were probably well over 100ft from the court and barely elevated enough to see over someone 3 rows in front of me that can't help being 6'10" or taller.

My fear is the new gym was by default going to be multipurpose in some capacity in that it was going to allow for gymnastics and volleyball. ffs... if we build a new gym make it 100% for basketball and nothing else.

Given cost increases I'm very curious what they come up with when the final plans get put up for bid to build it.

Yes, the biggest problem is how slowly both BD and Coleman seats rise so slowly. I think the gym will be multipurposed, but I think the vision they have is good.

I just don't see building costs coming down that much. I could be totally wrong.

I was told recently the AD asked CNO if he would rather have a new arena or NIL $ He chose the $ May or may not be true.
l fully believe that donations made to NIL will impact all facility improvements in all sports.

l do not look for a new arena any time soon. l actually think Coleman is a pretty nice place to watch a basketball game.

Now that could be true. I don’t blame him. Jimmy’s and Joe’s matter more than anything. It sucks for us. Another reason for me to hate NIL. I have no problem with players making money, but I would rather them do it on their own. I will ask one of my folks.

You are probably right. Yet, Miss State who probably has less money than most schools has updated their crappy gym. We will have the worst arena in the SEC. Vandy is updating their arena.

Bump. The Fertitta Center we played at today is a true basketball environment.

It only holds 7,000 but 10 times louder than Coleman. Great atmosphere for home games.

There’s not many worse than Coleman

We got a pretty good record in Coleman though. l have a feeling Oats would rather have plenty of NIL money ahead of money for a new arena.

Oats overall record at Coleman is pretty impressive like it is.

I love Coleman. It’s a tough place for opponents to play when it’s rocking in there. Duke, Indiana, Kansas, and UCLA are just a few examples that you don’t need a new arena to have an elite program. Their venues are all older than Coleman.

When we played Houston in Coleman last year l thought the roof was gonna blow off.

Coleman is a dump and it ridiculous Bama is still playing games there. Lighting is horrible as are the seats. Always lip stick on a pig.

IMO this season is going to prove we can fill 15k very well when the team is rolling and the opponents are interesting. I hope before a final signoff happens on any plans that they inch up the capacity of a new arena to around 13k with the ability squeeze another 1k or so when demand is there for a really big game.

The atmosphere at Coleman can be as good as any arena in the country. I won’t be disappointed at all if we play there for many years to come. I would actually prefer that over a new arena with 5-6,000 fewer seats.
Sorry, there is no way this statement is or will ever be true. I have broken this down so many times. Can it get loud? Yes. Is it a place that other programs drool over when they are looking to design a new arena? Absolutely not!!! You can love it all you want, but it is a terrible place to watch a basketball game. I have been going since I was a child in 80s. Back when the opposing team had their bands in the arena. It is not imposing arena and it has horrible sight lines for the fans. There are no sky boxes or floor suites. It also has the fans way too far away from the court. You can also hear the buzzing of the lights as they give you cancer from their radiation.

I mean no disrespect, but show me any team that doesn’t have a good record at home in basketball. GA is about the only one I can think of.

ROFL, those buzzer lights were crazy if you got to the game early enough that basically no one was on the court yet for warmups. And if for whatever reason they went out it was 5+ minutes for them to warm up again. They were swapped out for LEDs years ago weren't they?

Coleman can absolutely be a great environment when there is a big time opponent and the stands are packed. The raw emotion that erupted when Pettway beat the Gators was off the charts. It's still my favorite memory in Coleman and that crowd was wild and rowdy for 40 minutes. Houston last season was supposedly pretty intense as well.

Due to the nature of how horrible the stands are setup it does require a full gym and great opponent but IMO it reinforces my feeling that any new arena needs to be more than some 10k seat tin can with a loud sound system. Bama can fill a 13k seat gym and have an insane environment IF they do it right and stay tf away from anything resembling multipurpose. Basketball only gym or just stay put IMO.
