Early Look at UCLA

I will give you my early impression of UCLA. Tey offers some challenges to Alabama that we have not seen this season: I am sure that Harper will give us a better breakdown later.

1. UCLA has a deep bench, with ten players averaging more than nine minutes or more a game and six players averaging more than 10 points a game scoring.

2. They have six players that shoot the 3 at better than a 35% clip, including three starters.

3. The height of Riley, Hill and Smith presents a potential front line height that we have not seen this season. They do not have the dominant big man like Miss State, but they present a size challenge for us.

4. The man that makes them go is a little 5'11" point guard, Tyger Campbell. He is a good drive and score guy hitting 42% of his shots but only 25% from 3. He is a great drive and dish guy. The game could be decided by how well JQ handles Campbell, as we have no one else to match with his quickness. The good news is that JQ should be able to get his shot whenever he desires.

5. Jaquez, Riley and Bernard are good on the boards, but like Alabama has Herb Jones, Jaquez is an Offensive rebounding machine, even though he is a Guard. They have three players that average around seven rebounds a game.

To me, an average basketball fan, UCLA is a mirror image of last years Alabama team, with a point guard. We will have to guard the outside shot and keep them off the three point line. It must be noted that they went 12-6 in the PAC12, which now appears to be a feat. We had one common opponent, Stanford, which they lost in overtime at Stanford and we were embarrassed early by Stanford.

UCLA is deserving of being in the Sweet 16 and probably did not deserve to be seeded as low as they were seeded.

Took a look at their stats. At first glance appears scary, but those percentages are on far fewer 3 point attempts. A few guys who could hurt us if we leave them alone, but they don't focus on getting their volume out there. Think they'll concentrate more on getting the best shot inside the arc. I noticed their depth. They'll have more options and staying power than what we've faced recently.

We need to get them in a fast paced game like we did with Maryland last night. That is not their style and should benefit us.

Make the threes at a high level and make the FT attempts. This game should push towards the 100 point line IMO. Over Under probably around 165 to 170.

Their PG is not as good as Cam Thomas (LSU) nor is their top 3 players any better than LSU's big 3 or Arkansas for that matter. My point being is that I don't think they are going to present anything we haven't already seen & beaten this season. If we play like we did against Iona we probably lose, play like we did last night and we win easily.

There might only be one team in the country that can match the talent of LSU's first three players. LSU just had nothing to go with the first three players. Cam Thomas will be drafted in the first ten if he comes out this year.

Arkansas only has two players that would start at Alabama, Moody and Smith, but Arkansas is a basketball team, as opposed to LSU, which relies on three talented players.

Make no mistake, UCLA's PG Campbell is a quality college point guard; but he will not play at the next level. Campbell is quicker than JQ and will present problems if we cannot contain him. He will not be able to cover JQ.

I agree that we cannot play a C game and win, but if we are a B+ we will be alright. ACU had no chance against UCLA, as they could not match UCLA's speed or size.

All bs and crimson colored glasses aside, if you play like we did last night against Gonzaga, we will win.

Wait a minute now, Texas is a much bigger and faster team than UCLA and ACU handled them just fine. I watched the UCLA game and they matched up well with UCLA. Depth wise UCLA just wore them down much like we've done our first two opponents..

Have to admit I would feel MUCH better about this game if we weren't in that crackerbox high school gym at Butler. As noted above, we did not shoot well there at all. BTW, I noticed that Michigan is the only 1 or 2 seed that doesn't have to play their next game there. Interesting...

I think our length will pose problems for them. It’ll be a high scoring game and who shoots the 3 the best will win. They do not have a good defense so we will get whatever shot we want but we will have to knock them down.
I have only watched one game but why don’t you think they play good defense ?

They looked great and stifling against albeit Abilene Christian

Well sounds like we need to back off of their PG and make him shoot the 3 if we can’t keep him in front. The opposite of what we did to Cooper the first time we played Auburn.

I watched both Abilene Christian games and the team reminded me a little of Anthony Grant's teams at Bama. ACU played really hard on defense but the offense was atrocious. They rarely ever got wide open looks at the basket and every bucket seemed to take an extraordinary effort that was ugly.

UCLA is a good team with good players and they have some length.

But there is no comparison between Bama and Abilene Christian. Abilene starters were two 6-0 Guards, one 5-7 Guard, one 6-8 Forward and 7-0 immobile center.

In other words Bama's length, quickness, speed and tenacity on defense will be slightly different than being guarded by diminutive guards. UCLA had an overwhelming height advantage to get their shots off at anytime, even when contested.

UCLA will have to play defense against Bama and again UCLA's overall height was also a big advantage on D against Abilene.

All being said UCLA will be a tough game for Bama, but likewise for UCLA.

Abilene Christian is one of the worst offensive teams I’ve ever seen in the NCAA tournament. They have no offensive game plan and zero shooters. Not hard to look good against them.

UCLA is in the bottom 20 in the NCAA in tempo. They’re going to try and slow Bama down big time. That will be the key on which tempo will the game favor. UCLA ranks 337 in tempo and Bama is 12. Alabama will have to be better in the half court than what they were against Iona

I agree Harper, and I think AC is one of the worst teams I can think of to make the tournament.
Bama can win this one with UCLA with our defense and solid offensive game.

Can’t be the worst team.. they defeated a very good Texas squad and three seed ... but I get your point

UCLA's Johnny Juzang was the # 34 overall player by Rivals in 2019, going to Kentucky and I'm sure they wish they still had him. He's a player.

Overall to me this sets up a lot like Maryland, which had Wiggins who put up 27 on us and will be in the NBA and they had a nice complimentary scorer. Maryland wanted to slow it down and play defense, but we shot well and imposed our will and sped them up.

As everyone is noting, UCLA likes the slow tempo and wants to accomplish what Maryland could not. Seems like this game will either be us missing shots and allowing UCLA to be comfortable in a halfcourt game (in which I expect a nailbiter type game), or we'll be on our game, moving the ball quickly, hitting our shots and running UCLA off the court like Maryland. Their gameplan and talent just seem to have a lot of similarities to Maryland. I like our chances.
