I think you do a really good job, we obviously differed on your opinion as to how good we were. The question I have is how you didn’t know about the apathy on the team and the lack of leadership. My question is did the players quit on Oates? DoIt was the best of time, and it was the worst of times. That’s a great way to describe that season for Alabama. I’m going to post this thread, then I’m taking a break from Rivals for a while. I’ll pop back in when they get transfer guys I’m sure, but my wife and I are doing a social media cleanse starting tomorrow.
When it was apparent JQ injured his knee badly in the first three minutes yesterday, you knew it was going to be a tough hill to climb. The players held it together for most of the first half, but it came unglued the second half. ND couldn’t miss and Alabama couldn’t hit. Theme of the final two months of the season.
Putting this year behind us, Alabama will reload and be right back where they were in terms of expectations. I expect a lot of attrition this off-season and only 3-4 guys return, and that is much needed. The blame goes all around, but these players just didn’t have it. They didn’t have a leader on the court. The depth wasn’t there. Based on Oats’ comments on nobody wanting to go to shoot around but JQ speaks volumes on where their head was. NIL deals left and right taking the drive out of a lot of players. They know they’re making a lot of money, why go to voluntary things? Not saying that’s all our problems, but it adds to them. Whether these guys felt the pressure or they were just satisfied with last year, who knows, but they did not play up to the standard they set.
Now let’s talk Nate Oats. Nate has been a HC in college for only 7 years. He’s won his conference tournament 4 times and regular season 3 times. After the end to a Covid season, he took a bunch of underachieving guys from the previous regime and turned them into champions in just 2 years. He lost a lot of leadership that didn’t have to buy in to him or come back to school for him, but loved him enough to give it one last shot and it paid off. 2 years into his tenure he had one of the best seasons in Alabama history. This year, he had similar faces back, and a decent recruiting class come in. Lost his best transfer to injury and one of his best recruits never came back around after tearing his achilles. That left him short handed on the bench and pair that with a couple recruits that didn’t live up to the hype, and that’ll end up being a disappointing season. With that being said, they showed that even in disappointing seasons, the ceiling as high as anyone in the country. I don’t think you will see the same lows moving forward. It’s growing pains. It’s only year THREE. Our program forgot we could reach the top like they did last year and beat teams like Gonzaga and Baylor, but now the bar was set. I love it. If a 6 seed in the tournament is a disappointment, sign me up! I’m disappointed, but excited for the future and everyone should be as well. There will be people who point fingers at Oats and whoever, but football will be back soon. No biggie. Like I said, everyone deserves blame but not one person deserves all of it.
As I sign off here for a while, I just wanted to say how disappointed I am in this site not putting out any articles of our NCAA game on the site. I used to enjoy doing it, but I guess basketball just isn’t as important anymore. I get it. I’ve tried keeping the coverage up for close to 10 years now, but I’m going to start scaling back. Need to spend more time with my family of 4 now and finish out coaching my first year as head baseball coach. I love the board and everyone on it even if we disagree. Sorry for the long post but I just wanted my thoughts out there. Till next time!
the players dislike him or each other?
