for all of yall

semi-oldtimers like me, im 55. how good would herb jones be if he had alfonzo buck johnson`s touch around the rim?
i loved buck johnson but if i had a choice between buck and herb on my team. tuff choice, but herb would win out.

i know that was not the question. did not mean to change the subject.

I think Herb is a heck of a defender and always plays his tail off, but someone needs to work with him on his footwork. He seems to always be out of control when driving to the basket. Heck other than Quinerly, I see that out of a lot of our players. We would be deadly if we weren't so out of control all the time. Herb is still the type of player that I would have on my team any day of the week. He has two things that are not easily taught. Hustle, and heart. The rest can be taught. JMO

im with you pwest. remember the good ole days with terry conner throwing lobs with buck on one side and derrick mckey on the other.
love and respect your basketball info and opinions from my short time here, BUT you agree that herb is not even in the same universe as buck. i said it was a hard decision, but herb is definitly in the same universe AT LEAST.

as i said above--it would be a tuff decision, but i would take herb over him if i could only have one of them on my team. hard decision though.

watching herb frustrates the shit out of me but like rojas he gives 100% all the time.
serious question. if you took herb of this team and replaced him with buck at that stage in his career--would the team have had more success. maybe, maybe not. some thing to comtinplate for sure.

Hard to believe to have that handle the ball that well and be that athletic that it is even possible he could finish so poorly at the rim.

buck could get you 25 and 10 every night. that was a stretch in the same universe.

That answer is yes/ no doubt. Different level player than Herb. Few players on this year’s team would get many minutes at all on those teams with Buck, and McKey.

Just asking- how much did you see Buck Johnson play?

been following bama for a long time. i was 12 years old when the rocket 8 won the SEC. buck was no doubt a much better offensive player than herb. i would have a hard time choosing between them as an over all player.

both great players for sure.

if buck would have been 6-10 and 20 more pounds they would be talking about him like the maiiman karl malone. whatley had some trouble in school and left early and got into drugs and alcohol but i hear he has been sober for years now.

I’m going to echo what others have stated earlier in a very respectful manner...GTHOHWTBS

Herb Jones is NOT in the same galaxy with Buck Johnson. Herb does not have the skill set, offensive moves, handles or shot making ability Buck John displayed while playing for the Crimson Tide and Houston Rockets. Buck was a good defensive player. The only thing Herb Jones flashes that is remotely within the realm of possibility when comparing him to Buck is importance to the overall success of the team. Herb is an excellent defender as well. I love Herb’s grit and leadership. I am looking forward to seeing other parts of his game catch up with his defense and leadership. This is the last time I wanna read this stuff from you! OKAY?!?!? :pkys

Can't speak much to Buck Johnson as that was about a year before I remember really started paying attention to Bama basketball (roughly '86/'87). But IMO Herb Jones would have been an absolute monster playing with the athletic teams that Wimp had in the 80s/90s and a PG that could find him in the post. Granted Wimp probably plays Herb at the 5 but he could have handled it.

If Herb could commit to trying to rip the rim down whenever he can reach it he would average about 6 more points per game. So many of those missed layups he could have dunked it but didn't for whatever reason.

How can someone watch Herb and say it frustrates them? Sure he does silly stuff, but what player doesn’t? He impacts the game in more ways for his team than anyone in the country outside of a couple players.

Despite being the POY and DPOY, Herb's biggest contribution to this team is his leadership, he, along with JP, has taken ownership of this team and that has helped us win games this year that we would lose in the past. BIG fan of Herb.
