Are teams better off taking a proven portal player vs a one and done freshman player? JD Davidson is a future NBA talent but has not contributed as a difference maker so far.

I think a proven portal player would help more in this situation than losing JD at the end of the year.

Just good for discussion !

unless jd improves alot before the end of the season, he will be back until he does. so, in this case i like to get the guys in oats system as soon as possible.

It is a good question, but difficult to answer. It just truly depends on the player. It would be tough to find a player as good as Sexton in the portal. He was great right away. A lot take more time, so the “right” player from the portal would be more likely to contribute right away than many freshman(like a Primo), but some of these one and done’s, like a Zion Williamson, are just great from day one.

I started a post about this a few weeks ago and I havn't changed my view. Give me JD next year as a Sophomore over almost any transfer pg. From the time these freshmen step on campus they are living and learning Oat's basketball and at some point you need to be getting a return from them. Now, regardless of Davison's development you don't pass on a transfer who is a no brainer but I think last years class will result in a reduced need for help from the portal if they don't all leave in the offseason.

We took charge of the game last night as soon as we got JD out of the game. It doesn't seem that winning is that important to JD. His powder puff passes are killing us, and he really doesn't have any confidence in his outside shot (which we desperately need). I am not impressed.

I could be wrong, but I don't see JD as a "one-n-done." He is not aggressive on offense and actually slows the game down when he is pg. Right now, he is playing like a freshman and logging too many minutes. He has his moments where you can see his potential, but he hasn't put it together yet. Having JQ, JS, and JD on the floor at the same time should be an opponent's nightmare.

I’d say winning is probably much more important to him than any of us… he’s not playing well. Not sure why that would mean winning isn’t important to him.
