I've had a day to digest this, so here are my overall thoughts of Oats.
Recruiting: So far has done a phenomenal job. No complaints in this area.
Philosophy: This is where things start to come off of the rails for me. Are we an exciting team to watch when things are clicking right on offense? Absolutely. When we're not hitting, it's ugly. Most successful coaches are not one dimensional. They teach their teams the basic fundamentals of offense, and they can play multiple styles if their opposition takes their Plan A away. So far from what I've seen, Oats can't adjust when we face a team that defends the 3 well. Get some actions going to get the ball in the paint. Not a ball screen every time, not an uncontrolled drive. GET A DAMN ACTION WITH SOMEONE AND HAVE SOMEONE FLASHING TO THE FREE THROW LINE. Go score, or kick it out once the defense collapses.
Defensively - Again, one dimensional. We solely rely on one style of defense in half court man-to-man. Several games last year, and the Texas A&M game comes to mind from last year. They killed is driving the lane all game. We stayed in man and kept getting beat to the basket. Not one time did we go to a zone to pack the lane against a very poor shooting A&M team. Supposedly we like to play this fast-paced style. For a team like WKU who slowed the game down, why don't we ever extend pressure via a half court trap, or full court man to speed them up? Make them play our style?
We're never going to win consistently with Oats. Teams only have to prepare for one thing on either end of the floor.
