GAME THREAD: No. 11 Alabama at South Carolina

I think it's a gimmick style of play that will likely fail in the tourney. Proof is when Bama has played tourney teams the last couple weeks and lost.

JMO, but I've said this last year when Bama struggled to make shoots. Same has gone for this year when the better teams get right up in Bama's face. Even the Villanova team that shot a lot of 3s also had the ability to knock down the open mid range shot.
failed nova? last year spacing hurt us a ton. lots better this year. I think between the chances of hitting a layup with the chance of drawing a foul if you dont is better than a midrange jumper.

An open shot is an open shot. Even the best shooters in the NBA like Steph, Lillard and KD takes a lot of open mid range shoots a game because teams teams try to run them off the 3pt line.

I don't get the mindset that no matter what we are going to take a 3 (open or contested) or a layup (even if it's highly contested and gets block), all the while ignoring a open shot in the midrange.

Like I said, that Nova team that won the NC two years ago shot a lot of 3s, but they also had players smart enough to take the open midrange and they nailed them. Good shooters can shoot no matter what and 2 points is 2 points.

Petty take and hit the open midrange and the game is over.

I get what you are saying. Just like it was unfair IMO to critique Oats style with last year's roster I think we could be doing more of the same with this year's roster too. While I don't foresee Oats ever being really happy with the shot you are describing I find it hard to believe that he would take a talent like Colin Sexton and discourage them from shooting 8 foot floaters in the lane. Aside from the occasional three or rebound Herb, Rojas, and Reese provide nothing on the offensive end if they don't get to the rim. I dont't know that you want any of those guys taking pull up 15 footers. So do you put all of them in the corner or try to make it work the best that you can? I watched some Buffalo film last year and I am pretty sure I saw midrange shots. Not the norm but If a guy like Burnett, Tchikou, etc. show that they can slow down in traffic and make a wise 12 foot shot during practice I suspect CNO will take it. If you can show me in the future (when all of the players are his recruits) that he coaches it out of these kids then I'll start leaning your way more. The overall talent level/ball IQ on these upper classmen is still lacking but they play hard. Got to hand it to em.

I know Bama has hit a few here and there, I just wish it was a little more frequent. Teams play Bama so tight on the 3pt line now and every team come into the game wanting to protect the basket. It seems like teams are giving Bama that midrange shot but they rarely take it. How many contested missed layups might have been a basket had Herb or someone just pulled up around the FT line?

I wish Oats would run a few plays where players flash to that top of the key to take a jumper. I think it puts more pressure on a D when they have to defend the entire half court, not just the basket and the 3pt line. Those guys around the basket now have to now jump out of the guy taking that mid range, which could lead to easy passes to the basket as player cut to the basket.

do I wish we hit that Collin sexton jumper more? yes. In the end I agree with you. I really wish we hit more off the inbound honestly.

Gotta love that look of bewilderment EVERY TIME Rojas gets a foul called on him. He throws his hands up as if he is miffed at the call.

ROLL TIDE!!!!
He's gotta be related to Bobby and Danny Hurley. They never thought they fouled anyone either.
