Interesting note on Thad Matta

I have a couple of friends that live in Chapel Hill and they won’t Roy out and wanna try and get Oats 🤷🏻‍♂️. I mean it’s cool Bama being good at basketball but I’ve been a UNC basketball fan as long as I’ve been a Bama football fan so that wouldn’t hurt my feelings lol.
The fan base at UK is turning on Cal more and more with each game. A lot of their fanbase love Oats as well although I think he'd be 4th or 5th on their list. I have no knowledge of their programs but I see blue bloods like Duke, UNC, and Kansas hiring from within given their outstanding history.

I think that is the nature of the business now and as fans I don't see why we care. Would it be wiser fiscally to see Oats do this 1-2 more years before throwing the bank at him? Absolutely. But just like a QB in the NFL only "X" amount of teams have a great coach and thus are perennial top 15 teams every year. If you have the opportunity to obtain that guy for any period of time you do it and you ride his success for as long as you can. If it doesn't work out you send him packing and pay his buyout. No money out of our pockets.
But we laugh at the Auburns and Tennessees of the world that make hasty decisions and are on the hook for millions of dollars to get rid of their mistake.

And if Oats busts then Bama should be made fun of too. Just the way it is. Whoever is in charge of making the decisions has a lot more to worry about than what rival fanbases say on a message board. There is so much money involved now that I am not sure how big of a factor that is anymore.

So we are all of a sudden going to become Auburn and Tennessee? Get all caught up in your feelings because of one good run and give a coach a raise and high buyout before he really wins anything. How did that work out for their football teams?
Jesus, you don't know good basketball or good basketball coaches when you see them. This guy isn't a one-shot wonder. He's been winning like this since he's been coaching. His teams always improve and always play hard and he develops a consistent culture of winning, something we haven't had since Wimp Sanderson scowled on the sideline. And recruits players that can play in his system, which is an advanced model of uptempo basketball.

I can literally name dozens of coaches that had that same resume in their respective sport get raises and contract extensions after one good year who ended up getting fired a year or two later.

He is under contract, you don't go and give him an extension and a raise after one half of a good season. It reeks of desperation. They made the same mistake with Avery. Now if Oats gets Alabama deep into the Tourney, then we can talk.

it’s not hard to find coaches who have been overpaid or had contracts extended, especially when it it clear with hindsight. The difficulty is in understanding who is worthy of the raises and extensions prior to another school making an offer to good to pass on. You clearly don’t know good coaching from bad so you can bow out of any discussion.

I’d rather get made fun of for digging a financial hole than lose a guy like Oats and watch him become Billy D at some other school.
oats will receive a nice raise and extention during the off season. he will be aware it is coming well before it is made official

i do not think there is any danger that he will leave

Why not wait until there are bigger basketball schools after him? It's doesn't take much to say we can offer you more to stay. If it's about the money then he stays; if it's about getting to a better basketball program, he's gone anyway.

Because it’s a bad look to underpay a guy only until someone tries to take him away. Look, I don’t disagree with your point that we’ve had a nice run and there are a lot of overreactions on this board. I’m just saying over the last 15 years bama hoops has teetered into the “what’ve we got to lose” category. As a fan, if we think we might have a special coach I want our admin to be proactive in locking him up by showing him our loyalty BEFORE the big fish comes.

I hear you. I wish someone would underpay me at the tone of 2.5 million. Realistically how much more would the administration be willing to pay a basketball coach? 3.5 - 4 million?

Honestly I don't know how much we can pay a BB coach. But I do believe that CNO is for real, has all the attributes we look for and is an excellent representative for the University. He has done well at every stop so I don't think this season is an outlier. He recruits, he coaches hard and demands discipline from the players. Certainly a healthy bonus is called for if we advance deep in the tourney!

If you wait until your wife has better offers you ain’t in the running to start with. You have to show the love.

not sure how much money schools will be able to pay coaches, if the ability for most of the fans is taken away from them to come watch games because there is no fuel to power their vehicles. fan support is where a large amount of the money comes from. sports is a part of life for many people and the ability to enjoy the games up close and personal could be coming to an end.
