JQ part of the “I am #NotNCAAProperty” Protest

I totally agree with you on the fact that these athletes should be able to make whatever they want off of their own names on their own time. My point was that just because the University that you are playing for is making money while you are getting a free ride from them does not entitle you to part of their profits.
Totally agree. The NIL movement is all about players being allowed to profit on their own name.

any model that includes athletes being paid by the school to play or by the ncaa would simply destroy college athletics

The student athletes are not receiving a damn thing for free. They must train and participate in all team organized activities, ie practice, games, study hall and PR events, as well as attending classes and performing in those classes adequately. Other students that receive scholarships to attend the university are able to capitalize off of their talents. There might be a handful of student athletes attending the university who are poorly prepared during their early childhood and secondary education. But, each of them fulfilled the admission standards and are being provided the resources to successfully complete the degree requirements in their chosen majors. Each student is required to attend academic meetings and their progress is monitored very closely. They might not speak the “King’s English” all that well. At the very least, they’re finally getting the resources needed to improve and develop academically and socially into productive members of society.

So, anything they can earn from their talents is justified and well-deserved. People are not property ANYMORE. Everyone has right to profit off of their talent and hard azz work. If capitalism and the marketplace are good for everyone in other aspects of society, then those same principles will serve college athletes and athletics just as well.

And your condescending attitude towards these student athletes reveal exactly who you are. How dare you mock their ability to not speak as eloquent as you’d like. That’s why they’re in school...to get better. Some people choose to speak a certain but are able to communicate in other forums just as brilliantly as you. Although, they are “playing a sport”. It does deprive them of their rights to earn a living or whatever fair compensation they seek. Slavery and that slave owner / Jim Crow-era mentality are OVER. I’m not crazy or a zealot for paying student athletes but I do believe in capitalism and the rights of individuals to earn a fair compensation for their work. Nothing in life is free!

The players are being paid. Free ride, a free college degree which most people have to pay out their rear ends to get. Free food, free housing, free books, free everything. And the kicker is they don't even have to be able to spell their own names, or be able to complete a full sentence. Our society has become ass backwards, wanting to reward people that don't deserve it, and charging those that do an ungodly amount of money. My gosh all they are doing is playing a sport. I haven't seen one of them yet do anything that effects the world in a positive way. If they deserve everything free in life because they can play with a ball, than so does the person who actually has to study their tail off to be successful. I'm not trying to knock anyone in particular, I just don't agree at all that the players who are getting a free ride in life already should be shown preferential treatment because they can play with a ball. JMO

Is this right?

JQuinerly is a good example as he & his buddies spent untold hours of developing themselves and the 'Jelly Fam' brand before signing a college scholarship.

Then because he signed a scholarship he can't capitalize off of merchandise or the monetization of their YouTube videos that showcased the 'Jelly Fam brand' and their 'skills.'

That’s my understanding of what he’s personally protesting.

Free Ride. Try being a Student Athlete at a D-1 school. Being a Student-Athlete in a Football or Basketball program at a D-1 school is a 14 hour a day job, 365 days a year for three and one-half years. There will be 6,000 or more young people sign D-1 scholarships as athletes this year and only 300-400 will ever go pro in any sport. Yes, they get a scholarship and education that would cost close to $40,000 a year, but not one of them signed up for what they have had to face this year, confinement in a bubble, in order to insure there was enough programing to fulfill television contracts entered by the schools with major TV networks.

Like a previous poster in this thread, I worked my way through school, tending bar after working for a Police Department. I can guarantee you that I worked many a midnight shift and would trade to get the midnight shifts, so I could attend classes in the daytime. It was no fun working as a bartender in a college town or a police officer, but I did what I had to do. None of the athletes signed up to be in a bubble for one solid year, while getting paid less than minimum wage.

Let me tell you my memories of the day of a student athlete. You must be at the weight room at 6:00 a.m each morning for workouts. At 7:00 you are at the training table for breakfast. Between 8:00-12:00 you get the freedom of attending classes. At 12:00 you are back at the training table for lunch. at 1:00 you are to the weight room where you get your workout and again have to start watching film, engaging in team meetings. Between 2:00 and 5:00 you are practicing. At 5:00 you are headed back to the training table. Between six and 10:00 you have mandatory study hall and if you are lucky you can squeeze in sometime to visit your girlfriend. You then get free time from 10:00 to 6:00 when the day starts all over again. This procedure goes on every day for 3 and one-half years. Most of these athletes are given nothing. Now you are locking up close to 1,000 young people and Coaches, so the NCAA can make a billion dollars and the players do not get anything else, so don't think these players have it soft.

Some of these players come from extremely poor enviroments and if someone gives them a dollar for a candy bar, it is an NCAA violation. You want to quarrel over whether the players should be able to market their likeness, when 95% will never go pro. I'll give you an example of one that did go pro. Josh Jacobs family did not even have a house or apartment. No one knew about Josh, because he was often sleeping wherever his family could find to sleep that night. His story is not isolated, the outcome is what was good.

I have a child that was a student athlete and that was captain of her team, while attending a D-1 school. She was lucky enough to have a Middle School Basketball Coach that helped her with her work ethic, a High School Soccer Coach that fostered her ability and College Coaches she trusted her. I thank them all.

JQ is a strong young man both on and off the Court and I am proud that he has learned to stand on his feet and represent himself and our University.

Paying players/NIL is a pandora's box of problems, but often times the blow is softened by the incredible amenities these kids get. Nutritionists, Chefs, massage rooms, inbelievable hang out spots. The issue is March Madness is the biggest money maker and the kids get nothing from it, and since they are being kept in a bubble to make it happen, the environment and food etc is extremely sub par. Very frustrating from the players stand point. They couldnt use that money to make sure the kids get a decent meal.

The only fair way to pay athletes is to profit share. If the sport you participate in turns a profit then the players get a % of the profits. Athletes on non-profitable teams just get what they would normally receive...tuition, books, fees, etc. You know that’s just life and the way the world works.

The problem is the athletic department as a whole doesn’t actually profit at most schools. Football profits, but funds the rest of the sports.

Ah, another example of some of the most blessed people in society acting like victims. Will turn out great. Victimhood culture always moves a society in a good direction.
