After the 2022 campaign, Alabama lost 18 scholarship players to the portal and after the 2023 campaign Alabama lost 31 players to the portal. 49 out of 75 recruits were gone. Some of the 75 recruited players left the year before. We ended Spring practice with 20 recruited upper classmen still on scholarship.
Coach DeBoer, in spite of coming in after the portal window was filled, was able to get eight players to come in. Just before Spring practice we lost our new OC to Seattle.
Something has to change regarding our recruiting philosophy for things to get better. We have been getting our reared stomped on in state recruiting for the last few years. If that trend does not stop, we are heading for a disaster. We are not Texas or tOSU, so we cannot buy ourselves to the top. tOSU and Texas will start three players that should have been starting at Alabama. Oregon started two that should have been at Bama.
I don’t know the answer, but the problem is that we cannot keep the best players.
We have to do a better job of regional recruiting, instate recruiting. We need players that want to be at Alabama. In the day of NIL and the portal, we have to get players that want to be at Bama.
Did I mention that this afternoon ND will be starting a Senior QB from Baldwin County? Ohio States started a running back was from Pike Road, Alabama, and Saban did not offer either a scholarship.
