I love ALL my brothers and sisters, and as I have travelled all across the country I find our fans who have never set foot inside the state. I also find alum all across the country. The most "impressive" was in Honolulu 5-6 years ago when my wife and I were out there when I was doing some work at Pearl Harbor. We went to a "Made in Hawaii" convention at the Center in Honolulu to see what it was all about. We both had on our Bama garb and literally before we got to the door from the parking lot we had six "Roll Tide" yells! One was a couple from Montgomery who were out there vacationing. The others lived in Honolulu and one was a huge Samoan gentlemen who gave me such a hug I thought he was going to crush me! Great guy! Had never been past California on the mainland but loved the Tide!
It continued once inside! We walked by the booth of a "candlemaker" who saw us, gave us a big smile and said "Roll Tide!" We walked over to her and said, "Roll Tide." She was a beautiful young lady who owned her own business. My wife asked her about being a Bama fan. She told us she was an alum! Her dad, who had never been to Alabama was a huge fan when she was growing up and watched or listened to our games whenever he could get them. She told him as she got older that she wanted to go to college at Bama, which she did. She came over from Kauai for four years, got her degree and went back "home."
Sorry, I digress .... I thought it might be fun for those of us who were able to attend school there to talk about what it was like when we were there. I was there from 65-70. A few short memories I have are T-town was a whole lot smaller! The "hot" places on Friday-Saturday nights late were Pizza Bills, Captain Cooky"s, and can't remember the name of the truck stop that was so good. Table shuffleboard was a fun beer drinking (and gambling) game and their was a place downtown and out by the tracks somewhere that was a gathering place. Spiller's Feed Store always had great beer prices. I remember buying a six pack of Old Milwaukee for 75 cents many times! Girls had to be in their dorms/sorority houses at 11:00 on Friday's and 12:00 on Saturdays! In '65 and maybe 66 girls could not wear pants to class or outside on campus. Guys could smoke in class but girls could not smoke while walking. (Not lady-like!) Except for engineering students, guys could not wear jeans to class those couple of years. And, you could always tell the engineering students because they had their slide rules on their belts! We dressed in ties for ball games! So glad that changed before I graduated!
I was a Frat Boy (Pike) and went through the pledge experience! There was almost always a poker game going on in our attic! Had a lot of great parties, probably why it took me five years to get four years of credits! I remember when the Kent State tragedy happened and our campus was disrupted as well. Final exams were made optional! I opted out of all mine!
Anyway ... just a few quick thoughts. Anyone else??
