When Coach Saban publicly makes remarks that he favors giving players second chances, do you think this encourages players to engage in more risky behavior because they know that he has already set a precedent for being lenient? If so, then Coach may have already unkowingly created a 'climate of tolerance' that will continue to lead to more arrests. In other words, if I know I'm not going to be kicked off the team for a first (or even second offense), then maybe my behavior is worth the risk.
Or do you think that players really think about anything before they act and just have to learn lessons the hard way?
