This Team

Barn has had 5 25 win seasons in their history. 4 of them under Pearl. And a Final Four- which Bama has never done.
Pearl is a great coach and it’s stupid to deny that at any level. I think that’s part of the point though. He’s a great coach that’s had bad seasons mixed in with good seasons. We will experience the same and we can’t call for the coaches head or question his entire system based on the down years

FWIW: there is an interesting article on another site that discussed the season with CNO. He talked about the season and it’s ups and downs after the Houston game. He admitted he and the other coaches needed to learn from this season and thinks they will. He also said he liked this team and they were good teammates and wanted to win. Last year they had 4 seniors and a first round NBA selection starting, this year you had 2 freshman, a first year high major and a jr college transfer in his 2nd year. They were talented but had difficulty maintaining a winning process after the strong showing early on. He said that he had to find a way to teach better the mindset of giving max effort and learning from wins as much as losses. I feel good about us going forward.

I’m jealous of their final 4 run, for sure. But, overall as a program, nothing particularly special going on. If our fans had experienced some of Pearls seasons at the barn they’d be crucifying him.

Atleast there is a site out there that covers hoops. This site clearly doesn’t give a rats ass

He has lost a bunch of goodwill from fans.

He just kept trying to force a square peg in a circle and he should have known to adjust somehow
I think it a bit more accurate to say he lost goodwill of a bunch of FoGs that were happy to have a distraction after bowl season. When football got spanked in the title game bball was supposed to pick up the slack for them. Instead the team was on a steady slide from mid Jan on with two hiccups that looked good.

Most of the basketball fans that remember the previous 25 years are a little more willing to see where this goes before diving back into the insanity cycle of mid major coaches that fail in 4 years. There is disappointment for sure but also some acknowledgememt of circumstances that couldnt be controlled and maybe a coach that hasn't finished growing up as a head coach.

It was obvious in Jan that something was just off with this team. Oats couldn't sort it out but we can hope he learns from it and does a better job finding players he can work with.

I think, at times, the board can’t separate threads that are critical of oats, staff, and team from the delusional that want to fire him.

Im in the group that wants Oats to stay.

He will grow as a coach. I think he has shown an unwillingness to modify as of yet.

May be one of the most disappointing I’ve watched. Horrible play, horrible coaching, and zero heart. I hope Oats actually takes some responsibility for this….
I think he has in every terrible loss. When asked about teams effort he would always answer saying that it was his responsibility to get the guys to play harder and to give more effort on the boards or coach them to cut down the turnovers. But you cant coach effort. He shouldered the blame for things that was on the players and did it all year. I dont get how some think hes thrown the players under the bus. If anything he needed to do more of it. If you wanna point fingers at Oats ask him why we never developed a half court offense. Thats on him

Trust me, I’ve tried on this one. The guys who don’t like oats will not pay attention to more than the 10 second sound bite that shapes their opinion

Hes literally shouldered responsibility every responsibility and more than not taken up for the guys when he shouldnt have. I believe he tried everything he possibly could with these guys but nothing stuck. Still think he should try to get better in the half court tho
