TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Jaeden Roberts chuckled a bit when asked whether or not practices feel a little bit different with Ryan Grubb as Alabama’s new offensive coordinator.

“I love his intensity,” Robert said Wednesday in Tuscaloosa. “I love him as a coach. I mean, he’s just that guy to be out there, the guy that we need to push the offense and make us better.”

While Roberts is enjoying his new offensive play-caller, laughing isn’t is normal reaction when it comes to Grubb. The first-year offensive coordinator brings a bit more fire to Alabama’s practices — and a bit more butt-chewings, too.

As an offensive lineman, Roberts has already been on the receiving end of a few of those. Grubb, a long-time assistant of Kalen DeBoer, first started working under the head coach as an offensive line coach at Sioux Falls from 2007-09. He has also managed offensive lines at Eastern Michigan (2014-16) and Fresno State (2017-19)

“Even for his small height, he’s definitely an offensive line guy,” Roberts said. “You can see that sometimes during practice. He gets on us. But you know he only does that because he knows how capable we can be.”
