TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — One pass from Alabama’s open practice last week stood apart from the rest. On a day where Crimson Tide quarterbacks struggled to connect with receivers, Jalen Hurts gave the patient faithful inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium something to get excited about.

Dropping back at the 40-yard line, the starting quarterback let loose a strike, hitting receiver Robert Foster in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Starved for any sign of progress in the downfield passing game, Alabama fans were quick to credit Hurts on the play. The praise was warranted, as the reigning SEC Player of the Year’s perfect spiral offered plenty of encouragement heading into his sophomore season.

However, it’s worth noting Hurts had a little help.

Foster made the play possible by getting past starting cornerback Anthony Averett down the sidelines, a feat not shared by many receivers last season. Averett, who led all Alabama defensive backs with eight pass deflections last year, is rated as the nation’s top cornerback by ESPN’s Todd McShay and isn’t exactly the easiest man to get past.
