Football 🏈 Nuggets from Alabama's first spring scrimmage

Alabama held its first scrimmage of spring camp on Thursday, as players took part in a 115-rep workout. Alabama’s first and second units took part in 50 plays apiece, while the third team saw the field for 15 plays.

While the scrimmage was closed to the public, Tide Illustrated was able to gather some nuggets from sources in attendance. Here are some highlights from the day.

— Ty Simpson had three touchdown passes and no interceptions. All three touchdown passes were to Miami transfer Isaiah Horton.

— Simpson’s biggest play came on his last drive where he scrambled out of the pocket before finding Horton 50 yards downfield for a touchdown.

— One of Simpson’s touchdown passes to Horton came on a short post route during red-zone drills, as the receiver jumped high to come down with a pass in the end zone. Another came on a block-and-go route where Simpson found Horton 30 yards downfield for a score.

— Simpson was the only quarterback to throw a touchdown on the day, but all three passers had their moments throughout the scrimmage.

— Simpson received the majority of first-team opportunities followed by Austin Mack. Keelon Russell got some first- and second-team reps but has been the third in the group throughout camp.

— There were a couple of dropped interceptions, but freshman edge rusher Justin Hill was able to come away with a pick.

— One source called Alabama’s defense “salty” stating there were a few sacks during the scrimmage.

— With starting left tackle Kadyn Proctor out, Alabama’s first-team offensive line consisted of Olaus Alinen, Geno VanDeMark, Parker Brailsford, Jaeden Roberts and Wilkin Formby from left to right.

— One source said it was a tough day for Alinen, who allowed several pressures throughout the scrimmage.

— Another source said VanDeMark has been earning the most first-team reps at left guard during practice and is a serious contender for the starting role.

— Jam Miller led the running backs, followed by Richard Young, Daniel Hill and Dre Washington. There were some positive runs of 4 and 5 yards but not many explosive gains from any of the backs.

— Multiple sources had positive things to say about Hill, who ran hard on the day. While Miller and Young are Alabama’s top two options in the backfield, the 6-foot-1, 242-pound sophomore could be one to watch.

— While Horton led the day for the receiver, freshman Lotzier Brooks made several nice plays throughout the scrimmage. Conversely, one source said redshirt freshman Rico Scott suffered multiple drops.

Football 🏈 What Kalen DeBoer said about Alabama's QBs following second scrimmage

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Despite popular belief, Alabama’s quarterback battle isn’t settled just yet. At least that’s what Kalen DeBoer said following the Crimson Tide’s second spring scrimmage.

Alabama went through roughly 115 plays inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Friday afternoon. While the scrimmage was closed to the public, DeBoer revealed that Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell all got reps with both the first and second units.

“They’re all three making throws, making some big-time throws,” DeBoer said. “Thought they all moved the chains at times when they maybe had their backs to the wall, in some second- and third-and-long situations, where they found a way to make a big throw. Obviously someone has to catch it, too.

“They’re continuing to build trust with the offensive line, and then I think it has to go the other way, too, the offensive line is getting used to cadences and getting used to what guys do. Does he usually break to the outside and scramble? Some guys just have those types of instinctual things they do, but they’re all a little different.”

Hoops 🏀 Cost for new Alabama basketball facility set to decrease

A new proposed financial package for the renovations and upgrades to Coleman was presented to the properties committee for the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees on Thursday that would drop the cost for the expected renovations of Coleman Coliseum (including a new facility for men's basketball) from $59.18 million to $54.6 million

Assistant vice chancellor for construction management Mike Rogers cited "very favorable bids" on the construction package as the reason for the new total construction budget.

The full board of trustees will meet Friday to officially approve the revised project budget.

Football 🏈 Five questions we have heading into Alabama's second spring scrimmage

Another week of spring camp will soon be in the books, as Alabama will take part in its second spring scrimmage today inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The Crimson Tide held its first scrimmage on Thursday, March 27, as quarterback Ty Simpson and Miami transfer receiver Isaiah Horton stole the show behind closed doors. Today’s scrimmage will also be closed to the public. However, there’s still quite a few things we’ll be looking to find out from the workout.

Here are five things we are watching for today.

Football 🏈 Why Jaeden Roberts loves Alabama OC Ryan Grubb's intensity at practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Jaeden Roberts chuckled a bit when asked whether or not practices feel a little bit different with Ryan Grubb as Alabama’s new offensive coordinator.

“I love his intensity,” Robert said Wednesday in Tuscaloosa. “I love him as a coach. I mean, he’s just that guy to be out there, the guy that we need to push the offense and make us better.”

While Roberts is enjoying his new offensive play-caller, laughing isn’t is normal reaction when it comes to Grubb. The first-year offensive coordinator brings a bit more fire to Alabama’s practices — and a bit more butt-chewings, too.

As an offensive lineman, Roberts has already been on the receiving end of a few of those. Grubb, a long-time assistant of Kalen DeBoer, first started working under the head coach as an offensive line coach at Sioux Falls from 2007-09. He has also managed offensive lines at Eastern Michigan (2014-16) and Fresno State (2017-19)

“Even for his small height, he’s definitely an offensive line guy,” Roberts said. “You can see that sometimes during practice. He gets on us. But you know he only does that because he knows how capable we can be.”

Football 🏈 How Alabama is replacing Tyler Booker's voice on the offensive line

Hoops 🏀 Nate Oats reflects on Alabama missing Final Four, maintaining standard

Nate Oats on Alabama's disappointing end to the season, how he expects the Tide to maintain a high standard moving forward.

Football 🏈 Alabama linemen competing over sweat, not stats

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There aren’t many stats for offensive linemen, so Wilkin Formby and Jaeden Roberts have turned to stains to measure their performance this spring.

“Me and J-Rob, we have a competition of who sweats the most at this point,” Formby said following Alabama’s practice on Wednesday. “He’s winning. He’s winning a little bit, but he just naturally sweats that much.”

SEC, not just Bama, will look a lot different next season
