Football 🏈 What's been said about a few of Alabama's under-the-radar players

There’s a new era at Alabama following Nick Saban’s retirement. There’s also a different level of media access.

Since taking over the Crimson Tide, Kalen DeBoer has allowed his assistant coaches to speak with reporters throughout spring camp. Interviews are also generally held in scrum style, in contrast to the press conference approach Saban preferred over the past few years.

The new media setup creates a more conversational feel during interviews. It also lends itself to random questions, as reporters bounce in and out of huddles to ask questions about different players and topics.

While most of what has been said in interviews has been reported on already, a few comments have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a look at five under-the-radar players Alabama coaches have touched on over the past couple of weeks.

Thoughts on SEC Basketball Tournament.

Coming into the SEC Tournament, I thought we were a tired team that needed a rest. I said that I would not be upset with a loss, as it would give them rest going into the NCAA. I think it is crazy to ask these kids to play 4 or 5 games in eight days.

Alabama benefited from the layoff and they looked it last night. I would love to see the SEC back the tournament up two days and finish on Friday. Two days can make a big difference and if the NCAA expands by 12 teams, as seems probable, what is requested of these kids will get worse.

Did anyone notice the makeup of the Elite 8?

I prefer to think that the SEC is one of four conferences with teams in the elite 8, and the SEC has multiple teams. ACC 3, BIGmath problem 2, SEC 2, Big East 1. Did you notice the two greatest basketball conferences, the Big12 and PAC12 have none? All season we heard how great the Big12 was. The two teams that held the top spot in the SEC for the entire season are still alive.

The ACC is guaranteed at least one final four team. The SEC could have as many as two, even though I believe Alabama is still playing with house money. I do not understand why we are the favorite tonight.

Hoops 🏀 Thoughts on ALABAMA TO THE ELITE EIGHT!

Take a breath... it has only been 20 years since any of us have witnessed this happen. Has it been an easier road this year? Yes. Should anyone care? No. Alabama defeated blue blood North Carolina for the second straight year, except this one put Alabama into the Elite Eight and ended North Carolina's season.

This was a true team effort. Alabama was down Latrell Wrightsell for this game and that was when people started doubting (myself included). UNC jumped out to a quick 7 point lead early in the game, but it was being played at Alabama's pace. UNC had guys like Seth Trimble and Elliot Cadeau hitting threes that shoot around 20% on the year. Alabama was leaving them open on purpose, and it backfired. It worked in the ACC Championship game, but they were hitting this game. Give a lot of credit to Rylan Griffen, who guarded RJ Davis majority of the game and held him to 4-20 shooting and also hit 5 threes as well.

The player of the game has to go to Grant Nelson, someone who has been constantly dogged on by Alabama fans. He had 24 points, 12 boards, and 5 blocks (including the game winner). He has had his ups and downs, but what a time to have his best game of his career in the BIGGEST game of his career.

Also, a huge shoutout to Nate Oats who coached circles around Hubert Davis tonight. There are some who believe he is not a good in-game adjuster, but he consistently made adjustments throughout the game. The biggest he made was deciding to run UNC off the three point line in the second half and funneling them to the rim, where Alabama played great defense and forced UNC into tough shots. I was very impressed with how Alabama responded the second half, even when UNC took a 7 point lead with 8 minutes left.

Alabama moves on to face one of the two teams to defeat them at home this season, Clemson, for a trip to the Final Four. That game was back in November when this team was still getting used to playing with each other, so expect a different team that will be playing with an edge to avenge that loss. Clemson is no slouch either, as they have defeated tough teams to get here and are definitely talented and experienced.

Enjoy this and cherish it

Hoops 🏀 The Washington Post is at it again! Accusations of "Sign-Stealing" for the Tide Success

As such, the Alabama graduate assistants, forced into the overflow section, enjoyed an unobstructed view of North Carolina’s bench from across the court. Once Tar Heels Coach Hubert Davis signaled to his team, the Crimson Tide’s graduate assistants set about deciphering the call. When that was complete, often within a second or two, they loudly shouted out the play in unison — “Floppy,” “Rebel,” or “Double” — to notify Alabama’s defense.

Are we going to talk about all of the midrange shots against UNC???

I saw it discussed in the game thread briefly. Not sure if everybody had the green light but I know Mark took a few and it felt like Estrada had nearly double digits with the 10-12 shot. Not sure what to make of it or if Oats addressed it after the game. Could be we’ve decided to chill on barreling headlong into shotblockers.
