Noah Clowney named SEC Freshman of the Week

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Following the Crimson Tide's victory over No. 1 Houston on Saturday, Alabama freshman Noah Clowney was named back-to-back Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The 6-10 freshman from Spartanburg, S.C. scored 16 points against No. 1 Houston to go along with grabbing 11 rebounds for his first career double-double in Alabama's road win over the top-ranked Cougars. Clowney has made seven three-pointers in his last two outings to lead the Crimson Tide in wins over South Dakota State and No. 1 Houston. This is the third SEC Freshman of the Week honor for Alabama this season, as Brandon Miller earned the honor on Nov. 21, and Clowney earned the honor on the week of Dec. 5. Alabama is the first SEC school this season to have multiple winners of the award.

Alabama is right in the thick of things for Ricks. He has heavy interest from Florida and LSU with Alabama getting the opportunity late. Right now it could go any direction.

Smith has long been a lean to the Tide. He doesn’t say much from a media perspective but it seems that he and Russaw continue to be a package deal. It may come down to speaks louder internally.

Carter has seen his recruiting take off and now as he prepares to make a decision, Alabama got him on campus.

You always want to take a few days to let this visit-high wear off but the Tide stand in strong position at this point.

Thoughts on Alabama's BIG Win over #1 Houston 71-65

What. A. WIN!

If you doubted before, you're likely a believer now. This team is different and I have said that since day 1. There are no egos. There's no drama. It's just a group of players that play their tail off all game and play with tremendous heart. A team full of freshmen and transfers shouldn't have been able to go into #1 Houston's place, arguably the most hostile environment in the country, and play as bad as they did and still win the game. Heart. Grit. Determination.

You knew this would be a grind it out kind of game with two of the best defenses in the country going at it, and it was. Alabama led for majority of the first half, but when Clowney and Bediako went off the floor late in the first half, Houston made a run to take a 31-27 lead. Brandon Miller was held without a point in the first half, Clowney and Bediako battled foul trouble, and Alabama had 11 turnovers but were down 4. You'd take that.

In the second half, Houston blitzed Alabama and jumped out to a lead as large as 15 midway through the 2nd half. Team full of freshman shooting below 40% with 13 turnovers and down 15 in a hostile environment typically folds right? Wrong. They kept chipping away cutting it to 7, then 6, then 3, and then 1. Under 4 minutes left and Alabama held Houston scoreless for nearly 4 minutes and took a 1 point lead. Alabama was forcing tough shots and Alabama were so close to putting it away with open threes, but couldn't convert. It came down to their achilles heel, free throws. Brandon Miller, freshman, stepped to the line and knocked down 6 in a row to put the game away and give them a huge win. Miller finished with 8, all on free throws, but came up big when it mattered.

The player of the game for me was Nimari Burnett. He played majority of the game and his focus was to shut down their best scorer in Marcus Sasser and did just that, holding him to 9 points on 2/11 shooting. Two freshmen also came up big in Jaden Bradley and Noah Clowney. Clowney led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with 2 blocks. Bradley finished with 12 and 4 assists. When Quinerly wasn't playing well, he stepped in and played at an extremely high level against the best group of defensive guards in the country. This team is growing up fast and it is coming at the best time before SEC play.

What. A. Win.

Man, I am loving this team........

I know it's early and don't want to get my hopes up too much. But I love the way this team plays. Unselfish, hustle, effort, clamp down defense, rebounding and a not give up attitude are a few characteristics that just make me want to yell Roll Tide!

CNO has done a masterful job crafting this roster, and his players are walking the talk. Total team effort. It's fun to watch. Hop on the bus and let's ride the rest of this season.

Roll Tide!

3 Eras of Nick Saban at Alabama

Could really do 4 eras of Nick Saban as a head coach in the SEC. But, his first 5 years were at LSU, so who gives a crap? Likewise going to skip over his first year at Alabama (2007) because that was all about remaking the culture rather than results on the field… it also makes the math a lot cleaner leaving it out, so that I can do 3 different eras of 5 years each.

2008-2012: 61-7 record, 3 SEC West titles, 2 SEC Championships, 3 BCS National Championship Game appearances, 3 national titles, 1 undefeated season, 2 undefeated regular seasons, 1 Heisman Trophy winner… still the gold standard, IYAM.

2013-2017: 64-7 record, 3 SEC West titles, 3 SEC Championships, 4 College Football Playoff appearances, 3 College Football Playoff Championship Game appearances, 2 national titles, 0 undefeated seasons, 1 undefeated regular season, 1 Heisman Trophy winner… although the Gold Standard Era saw a couple of QBs have career games against Alabama (Stephen Garcia for South Carolina in 2010 and Johnny Manziel for Texas A&M in 2012), this is the first time we see Nick Saban’s defense get flat worked on occasion.

2018-2002: 61-7 (with 1 game remaining) record, 3 SEC West titles, 3 SEC Championships, 3 College Football Playoff appearances, 3 College Football Playoff Championship Game appearances, 1 national title, 1 undefeated season, 2 undefeated regular seasons, 2 Heisman Trophy winners… for me, this is the what might have been period, with some of our best teams and most individually talented superstar players yet only a single national title to show for it all.

Football Recruiting Maryland transfer TE talks Alabama offer following official visit

Our very own Tony Tsoukalas breaks down the new offer to Maryland transfer TE CJ Dippre.

So is defensive football dead.....

Except for Georgia last year.....it looks like the west coast offense with bend and break defense is the norm now. I hate games coming down to who is lucky enough to have the ball last and score the win. I get that times change and trends come and go......but damn if I ever thought Bama would fall into this category. Am I missing something or am I right that a dominant Bama defense is a thing of the past?

OT Funny Story

As most of you know I'm a proud member of the Old Farts Club having been inducted in 2015 when I met Milso at the infamous Ole Miss Bama game where balls bounced off helmets and all kinds of weird things led to our loss at home...the price of admission was cheap, a bottle of JB for his wife Debra (he told me he never partakes ;) ) about half way through that game I wish I had a bottle myself...

You guys that are over 40 will remember George O'Leary the ex Georgia Tech coach...I was living in Atlanta when he took over for Bill Oliver at Tech, a team in the midst of a 1-8 start to their season...George was a cantankerous guy, and had little patience for the media if you recall...in his 1st press conference 2 things happened that were hilarious...

1st a reporter asked if he was worried about the mood of the team since Oliver was a popular coach, to which he quipped, they're 1-8 they better worry about my mood...next someone said if he had heard that DT Elliot Fortune was considering going pro...now Elliot was 6"8" and about 275 and looked tremendous getting off the bus but that's where it ended...George looked at the guy and deadpanned, in what sport because it won't be in football...he went on to say that the only way Elliot will be in an NFL stadium next year is if he buys a ticket to get in...don't you miss the days when coaches said what they really thought and gave no consideration for political correctness...

Wouldn't it be great to hear a coach answer a question about a player like this...well, he doesn't work very hard, he's not in shape and he's dumb as a stump...in addition every day it's something else, his ass, his arm, his elbow...so, does that answer your question about why he isn't on the field:)...

Caleb Downs/Juju Lewis- State Champ Game

Juju is a 9th grader for Carrollton plays QB for them. They are playing in the 7a State Championship right now against Downs. He could be the same age at the Thompson kid, or close at least. Impressive for both of them. I’ve watched this kid play a little. He can rip it. He claims offers from Bama and Georgia.
