Ole Miss Practice

My daughter had a soccer tournament in Oxford this weekend. Long story short, I took them to the football stadium and heard them practicing on the practice fields, and I found an open gate and walked right in and watched them practice for a bit. It blew my mind how easy it was. Trainers and staff kind of looked and noticed us but nobody said anything lol. All other visitors had their passes worn around their necks, yet there we were just hanging out.

Football 🏈 Notes from Alabama's second spring scrimmage

Here are some notes Tide Illustrated was able to gather from Alabama’s second spring scrimmage today.

— Ty Simpson had a good day and was the only quarterback to really push the ball downfield through the air on multiple occasions. He had four throws of 20 or more yards, including touchdowns to Emmanuel Henderson and Kobe Prentice.

The touchdown to Henderson was on a four-verticals route where Simpson hit the receiver up the seam on the left hash. Simpson also hit Kobe Prentice in stride for a long climb route across the field for a touchdown. Prentice also had a big reception on a wheel route for about 20 yards. Simpson’s first big completion of the game came on a 35-yard toss to Cole Adams.

— Prentice has received plenty of praise from sources as a standout in the receiver room.

— Milroe also had four series, but they all came with the first unit. One source estimated that he completed 6 of 9 passes, most coming from underneath throws. Milroe faced plenty of pressure and was sacked four times. There wasn’t much he could have done with the sacks as Alabama’s defenders got into the backfield quickly to tag him. Milroe did have a scramble for about 20 yards in the red zone.

Milroe threw a touchdown on a shallow cross to C.J. Dippre, who should have been down for a 5-yard gain but broke about four tackles before running another 15 yards for a touchdown.

— Caleb Odom made a jump-ball reception for a touchdown on a pass from Dylan Lonergan. Odom got wide open on a pick route, but it took Lonergan a while to find him. That allowed the defender enough time to recover. It didn’t matter as Odom used his athleticism and his 6-foot-5 frame to come down with the catch.

Odom is also creating a bit of buzz. However, the freshman did have a drop on the afternoon and also tripped on a screen that would have gone for a first down.

— The offense didn’t record a turnover for the second straight scrimmage.

— Parker Brailsford was once again missing from scrimmage, but Kalen DeBoer said he's " just going through some non-football related things."

“He’s going to be with us," DeBoer said. "He’s working out with our strength staff, and has done a great job there. He’s never done anything wrong, it’s nothing like that. He’s working hard, he’s going to be ready to go sooner than later. So, just taking it day by day.”

— DeBoer also spoke on Jaeden Roberts, who went down with a lower-body injury.

“Jaeden’s going to be fine,” DeBoer said. “He might be down for a little bit here, but he’ll be fine. We’ll do some follow-up evaluations. Early reports anyways, it feels like it’ll be nothing major.”

— Before Roberts' injury, Alabama's first-team offensive line was Elijah Pritchett, Tyler Booker, James Brockermeyer, Roberts, and Wilkin Formby from left to right. The second-team unit consisted of Naquil Betrand, Olaus Alinen, Joseph Ionata, Roq Montgomery and Miles McVay.

— One source listed defensive tackle Tim Smith and Michigan transfer safety Keon Sabb as standouts on the defensive side of the ball. Sabb recorded a big hit on one of Alabama’s backs as one of his highlights on the afternoon.

Thank You Kentucky Fandom

All over the world, the word is out, yelled high and low by Kentucky fans, that Alabama has the best coach in the SEC. Every recruit is hearing that and they are hearing it from the Kentucky fans. Personally, I believe they are telling the truth and Tomorrow I would welcome anyone that decides to forgo the NBA draft to consider transferring to Alabama, so they can play for Coach Oats.

In the meantime, just in case,, if I was Greg Byrne, Bryan Hodgson's and Bryce Drew's phone numbers would be on my speed dial. Hodgson is and excellent recruiter and nothing would change at Alabama other than the name of the Coach. Bryce Drew was is a bad situation at Vandy, but has proven he can coach and recruit at Grand Canyon.

In other words, if Kentucky calls Coach Oats, he is going to listen. Coach Oats plays the analytics and the Analytics say that if you take the Kentucky job you had better get a lot of money up front, because there is a 50% chance you will be on the street in three years. At Kentucky you had better make tow final fours every three years and win one National Title. Kentucky fans will not accept that there are twenty teams out there capable on making the Final Four every year, in addition to Kentucky. Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, UConn, Creighton, Marquette, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona, Oregaon, UCLA, Washington, Louisville, Houston, Syracuse, Indiana and Purdue expect to make the Final Four every year when the season starts and they all usually have teams that are capable.

I am thrilled that Kentucky fans think Alabama has a coach that is in that class of coaches at those schools.

Ole Miss vs Alabama Softball

Bama wins 5-1 sweeping the Rebels. Clark hit a massive 3 run homer off the top of the scoreboard. Broadfoot hit a solo HR. Beaver gets the win pitching 4 2/3 innings giving up no runs,4 hits,1 walk & 7 k's. Beaver wasn't real sharp and got relieved by Johnson who gave up 1 run on 3 hits with no walks and 2 k's. Kristin White made a great catch in centerfield reaching above the wall taking away a 2 run homer. Bama is now 29-8 overall and 6-6 in the SEC.

Hoops 🏀 FINAL THOUGHTS on Alabama’s Season

I am just waking up in Phoenix where I got to witness Alabama play in its first Final Four game in history. I thought it was an incredible game and as valiant of an effort as you could hope for. They didn’t get punked like Illinois or Northwestern did. They were tied with 10 minutes left, as despite a massive talent disparity, gave UConn fits for 35 minutes. They just went cold shooting for a four minute stretch and that was is.

UConn is as elite of a team as you’ll see in college basketball. They have two lottery picks, and the other three starters will get drafted this season as well. They’re experienced, talented, and extremely disciplined. I thought Bama had a great gameplan and majority of it worked, but UConn made a ton of plays. Castle was given the green light to shoot, and he made a couple, but his play making ability is why he is a solidified top 10 pick. Clingan is unstoppable (that Grant dunk tho!), and the other 3 play their roles so well.

Sears played arguably his best game in an Alabama uniform last night given the circumstances. He was lights out. Grant Nelson played his best game in an Alabama uniform. As gutsy or a performance as you’ll see from him. Estrada, Griffen, Wrightsell all played their roles so well. It was about as good of a game that Alabama could play considering their shooting from 3, the paint, not turning it over that much, and close to even on the boards. UConn is just a machine.

So what next? Alabama players have decisions to make. Will Sears go pro? Will Nelson go pro? Will other guys transfer? All this will be discussed in the next week or two. I personally think both Nelson and Sears are gone, just my gut feeling. I think Wague and Cosby will transfer. I can see Pringle transferring, but I think he may stay one final year. Other than that, you’ll likely have the rest of the roster back, unless someone like Walters or Parker leaves which can happen.

It’ll be a time of reflection this week and then could see decisions made in two weeks of what will happen. Regardless, these guys deserve to be celebrated for a long, long time.
