UPDATE 3:30 p.m. CT: Sources close to Pruitt are downplaying his involvement with Alabama at the moment. Pruitt is understood to support Steele in his new role and does not want to take away from his hiring.

Jeremy Pruitt could still be a part of Alabama’s future plans despite the Crimson Tide’s recent hiring of Kevin Steele as its next defensive coordinator. Sources have told Tide Illustrated that Pruitt was consulted about the hiring and is viewed as a long-term replacement for Steele in the defensive coordinator position.
Tide Illustrated understands that Pruitt was Nick Saban’s top candidate to lead the defense. However, hiring him proved too complicated due to the 18 level 1 violations the NCAA has alleged against him. According to sources, Alabama will still look to hire Pruitt as a defensive analyst with the intention of moving him to the defensive coordinator role once his situation with the NCAA clears up.
Steele and Pruitt share a solid relationship and have worked together on Saban’s staff at Alabama on two different occasions. Steele, 64, has served nine years as a coach in the state of Alabama. Following his 10th year this season, he will become partially vested which would result in significant retirement benefits.
Steele agreed to become Alabama’s next defensive coordinator Sunday, taking over for Pete Golding, who left last month for the same role at Ole Miss.
Steele is making his third stint in Tuscaloosa. He was Saban's first defensive coordinator at Alabama in 2007 before coaching linebackers in 2008. He later served as the program's director of player personnel in 2013 before coaching linebackers in 2014. In addition to calling defenses at Alabama, Steele has previous defensive coordinator experience at Clemson (2009-11), LSU (2015), Auburn (2016-20) and Miami (2022).
Pruitt has already served twice under Saban, working as Alabama’s director of player development from 2007-09 before taking over as the defensive backs coach from 2010-12. He then served as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator from 2016-17, producing top-rated defenses in both years. Pruitt also served as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1997.
