Awful coaching!!

The only mistake Oats made was putting the last possession in regulation in Herbs hands. We saw how it didn’t work in the regular season. Add that to the fact Herb was having an awful night shooting and on a stretch where he was struggling overall for a few games.

JQ missed from the line several times tonight. JQ had some critical turnovers in this game.
FT’s aside, who’s the better finisher around the basket? JQ. Who’s more likely to get a teammate open on a drive? JQ. Who’s the better offensive rebounder? Herb. So who should have the ball in their hands knowing all of that.

Obviously you know very little about basketball...ask any of our players tomorrow and they’ll tell you it was like playing in a YMCA league game...slow slow slow. We played to their pace and that is what got us beat. Sure we missed free throws...that shouldn’t have mattered. We lost because we allowed them to dictate the pace of play...period
I AM A FREAKING FAN, JUST LIKE YOU!

In all seriousness, I think your original post sucks and there is no need for it. Get over your basketball IQ.

Never underestimate the crying and second guessing after a Bama loss. So many wanna be coaches that missed their calling.
Dude, Bama was up one with the ball in hand with a chance to put it away and Oats took the ball out of your PG’s hand and put it in a player's hand who has been struggling offensively for the better part of a month now. That on no one but the head coach. He also give them all the green light from 3; some should at least have the yellow light

Worst coached game of the year...we let UCLA dictate the pace of play. We let UCLA walk the ball up the floor over and over again. Tonight’s coaching effort sucked and most especially in OT. We deserved to lose.
Bruce Pearl would be happy to have you as a fan.
I’m very proud of our team and what Coach Oats has accomplished this season.

He basically won the SEC tournament himself. Yes, he blew it tonight, but let’s don’t act like he can’t play.

I hope he has a very long NBA career.. praying for it..He’s a quality rep of the University.

Would you draft him based on offensive skill set?

I'm not, I'm a Herb fan. But we all can see how this night was going for Herb. Unless his name is Jordan or Kobe, I'm not giving him the ball in that situation.
It’s easy to second guess. The guy made big time free throws against LSU with his off hand last year. I was there and it was one the most impressive feats I have ever seen. It didn’t work this time. It sucks, but maybe we will have a new alpha next year that can do it. I am still proud of the kid and he should not be remembered for this game. He has done so much more.

I am sure you would be very proud of our football team if they lost to an inferior talented football team. UCLA was maybe on par with Ole Miss or Mississippi State and we laid down like a bunch of pansies...awful effort.

Lastly, he calls very little plays where you have cutting to the basket or back door screens even though the way teams play so tight on the perimeter; those plays should be there.
GOAT...while I agree here this is only our 2nd year running Oats’ offense. In his first season the offense was terrible but there was significant improvement in year two. I expect we'll see more improvement in year three, especially with even better players.

I don’t think that is why he will be drafted. I wouldn’t have drafted Rodman, either.

I am proud of how well our BBall team did this year, but there is times where we could reign in some of the 3's we jack up. Herb pulled a couple of 3's early in possessions that he shouldn't have taken, and I dare say Shackleford had one of his worst games of the year. He turned it over and tried to drive and force shots to many times tonight. Just picked a bad night for some of our worst games for some of the players. Free throws did kill us though. Just needed 1 more made to win in regulation. Unbelievable how many we missed at the line. And I agree, JQ should have had the ball in his hands at the end of the game instead of Herb tonight. Either way, I am excited for the future of BAMA Basketball under Oats.

I’ve gotta say even though the OP is a ridiculous post, I agree with GOAT on this particular point. In at least 4 of our losses Oats isolated Herb at the end of the game to make a play and win it. I’m thinking: Mizzou, Oklahoma, WKU, and UCLA. He just ain’t that dude. He’s a phenomenal player and does so many things well... but he ain’t that dude. At some point, you’ve gotta see that and make an adjustment.

Say what you want, but I've never seen a game that so obviously came down to one guy hurting you and keeping you from winning than we had the final 10 minutes. Final five of reg and then OT, you would have thought we were playing with four basketball players and one other tall guy who inexplicably handles the ball all the time.

He did it against LSU 2 weeks ago is all I will say.

Really wish herb had gotten lost on the way to Hinkle.

He did!!!! Did you see the way he played tonight. Great year though and it was fun seeing the team progress and actually have a chance to advance in the tournament. Who would have thought we would have made it this far. RTR

Shake you lose when you let the other team dramatically dictate the pace of play. The only way we lose to a team with inferior talent is let them do what they want. CMC seriously outclassed CNO.
Down one you have your worst shooter with the ball clearing out for him to shoot the game winner. Love Oats hate herb running point . Great year great job by UCLA . They made big shots.

Love all the basketball experts on this board. Oats got the most he could out of this team. It’s really easy to second guess decisions after the fact. Also pretty silly to compare him to Saban. Apples to oranges. It’s his second year and we were regular season champs, sec tournament champs, 2 seed in the ncaa tournament and made it to the sweet 16 with a chance to go to the elite 8 with a win in overtime. The players didn’t execute tonight. It’s as simple as that.

That was awesome, but it was also on a fast break in transition. Not a half court set
Here is how I look at it. Herb is a matchup nightmare. Q can be unless there is a shot blocker. He kept getting blocked. Petty can’t take it unless it is a 3. Who else do you give it to? Herb is the only answer and he got to the line. He is usually a good free throw shooter. Just my thoughts.

Y’all keep acting like we lost that game because of our final five minutes...that’s bs! We lost that game because of our game plan and our inability to dictate the pace of play. Mick Cronin kicked Nate Oats butt and that’s the end of the story.

It's puzzling and for a guy as good and smart as oats it's damn near insanity. I'm so confused about how these things get so screwed up because a guy is favored but is clearly not the best or even second best scoring option. And had already missed numerous free throws and had like 1 point I think.

Yep. Not bad points. I’m not saying Q has to take the shot... but Q has to be the guy initiating the offense. If the shot is there, take it. If he gets doubled, dish it like he did earlier to Gary.

Not just there at the line.. UCLA defended us better and executed better in the half court than we did.

Cronin did a great job out of timeouts and in OT with getting the right shots through good offensive sets
Yes, and Oates did horrible as always with TOs and drawn up plays. The end of the first half, we had almost 30 seconds and it consisted of zero passes or even any attempt of anything other than JQ doing a couple crossovers and taking a fadeaway 3. Pathetic. Then at the end was just a desperation LONG 3 by Reese, who came through like he usually does.

You ain't lying bro. Yesterday, Oats was coach of the year and Herb POTY but tonight Oats is an idiot and Herb shouldn't be on the floor. FT's lost this game, obviously.
In fairness to many on the board my friend (not me) Herb has been a boob not only yesterday, but for the last month of the season. I will leave tonight’s game to everyone else and I think Oats is a hell of a coach, but no way in hell will you ever convince me that JQ should be coming off of the bench for this team. Great year overall, but I hate it for Herb and Petty who ended their really nice careers playing in their final game and looking like it was their first game of their careers. Hope to see most of you guys on the TOC as football approaches.

Roll Tide!!!!

This is a fair point, even though still in hindsight, but the OP is the worst kind.

That's not entirely true; I've been critical of the lack of offensive sets all year. I said Bama will never win big if they can't be anything more than a three-and-drive team. I didn't trust this team to get past the Sweet 16.
If Bama goes 18-22 from the free throw line then I get your gripe and you can definately blame Oats' offense for the loss. But it's Oats' offensive scheme that got to the ft line 25 times where your players failed to convert. This team has lost 4 games over the past 3 months. 4. At Mizzou by 3, at OU by 5, at Arky during "free throw gate", and tonight. There was a whole lot of awesomeness that we got to enjoy this season and I'll take it. Look on the bright side, if you pegged the Sweet sixteen as the pinnacle for Bama basketball then you really have nothing to be upset about.

When the entirety of the success of the season involved sucking in first halves and relying totally on clutch runs down the stretch and out hustling the opponent, you’ll get that. When you have the ball for 30 seconds at the end of the first half down double digits and run zero offense, attemp no passes or movement and have a desperation fadeaway 3 attempt, there’s something wrong.

OP, just one question: How should we have stopped UCLA from walking the ball up the floor? Maybe we should have asked the PG to speed things up. UCLA had 40 points in the first half, hardly a snails pace.

Not having that ball in Q’s hand at the end of regulation is just ignorant. Yes, missing FT’s was the key to the loss. However we’ve had the ball in key offensive possessions in Herbs hands and he choked more often than not. That is not his strength. He’s a garbage player. He’s a Rodman. Let him do Rodman stuff. Let him follow the shot for putbacks. That’s poor coaching for sure.

I guess my problem is we will look back at this as a golden opportunity lost. This year with COVID wrecking a lot of teams practices, the Blue Bloods like Duke and Kentucky who depend on freshman one and done type players didn't have the time to “coach up” those young guys.

Bama has a senior lead team that has played a lot of games mixed with the perfect number of talented young players to have the kind of season they had.

Then you throw in all the upsets in the NCAA Tournament and this set up for Bama to get their first Final Four.

You force the pace...UCLA didn’t have the depth to play fast with us. In fact I don’t know of a team that could play at a fast pace with Alabama. Every game we lost we did exactly what our opponents needed us to do. We were good enough to play for a natty this year. With JD and our returning players next season our expectations should be well beyond the Sweet 16. JD will be the best NBA ready freshman in the country next season...he will be a one and done player. I hope we can take advantage of what we will have.

Not being argumentative but we pushed the pace when we had the ball and they chose to go slow on offense. No way we could change their offensive pace. That didn't lose the game. 44% from free throw line did. If we hit just 50% we win. Our regular average and this wasn't a close game.
