TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama worked indoors Wednesday as it held its third practice in preparation for its Citrus Bowl matchup against Michigan on Jan. 1. Players were dressed in full pads for the workout. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— After working with the running backs the past two days, Trey Sanders (foot) was not present during the viewing period. Monday, head coach Nick Saban said Sanders was cleared for on-field work but was not expected to play in the Citrus Bowl. The five-star freshman had been participating in drills while in a black jersey previously this week.

— Freshman defensive back Scooby Carter has not been at practice the past couple of days. The former four-star recruit entered the transfer portal last month but is expected to remain with the team.

— Christian Harris was limited and was not taking part in drills with the rest of the inside linebackers.

— After not participating in drills the past two days, receiver DeVonta Smith was back in action Wednesday. The junior didn’t appear to be at full speed but did take part in individual drills and caught passes from the quarterbacks.

— Alabama’s secondary worked in split groups during team drills. One side had three defensive backs with one lining up at outside corner, one at inside corner and one at safety. The first group on that side consisted of Patrick Surtain II at outside corner, Shyheim Carter at inside corner and Jared Mayden at safety. The second group was made up of Josh Jobe at outside corner, Jalyn Armour Davis at inside corner and Jordan Battle at safety. Marcus Banks was the outside corner on the third group while Surtain and Carter took turns inside and Battle played safety.

— I didn’t have the best view of the other side, but it looked as if Alabama was working on the Money and safety positions. Xavier McKinney was first at Money with Daniel Wright at safety. DeMarcco Hellams was next up at Money with Eddie SMITH at safety.

— Alabama’s first group on the defensive line consisted of Phidarian Mathis, Raekwon Davis and Christian Barmore. D.J. Dale (knee) is still absent from practice.
