Herb was a great defender but an albatross on offense...his winning POY is a reflection of his defense onlyThis will sadly haunt Herb for a long time.
Herb missed the free throws late. But he missed them bc Oats put the ball in his hands to make the play. That’s Oats fault. You put the ball in your best offensive players hands with the game on the line.If they make literally one more ft in regulation and go 12-25 from the line which is still God awful, they win. How can anyone on here be blaming Oats? And the refs blown calls at the end cost us. This one isn't on Oats
If the refs call the foul on Gary’s shot inside Bama wins. But bama didn’t make their free throws that’s the difference. Bama will be back.
Yeah games like that are the difference in a good or really good/great team. A team that loses to them and gets destroyed by Stanford isn’t going to end up winning several straight against other teams making it deeper into the tourney. They rely way too much on hot streams and clutch shots, and you just won’t keep getting those. We managed to do it against UT and LSU in the SECT and then had poor first halves in all three NCAAT games, they managed to win the first two against a 15 and 10 seed (who was something like 18-12) but couldn’t keep it going. Can't base the season on one game even when it hurts When we lost to West Ky I thought the season was over.
This. It's a joke that he won that award in the first place. There are at least 10 guys in the SEC that are better than himHerb was a great defender but an albatross on offense...his winning POY is a reflection of his defense only
I love the kid and his leadership amd I think he’s a quality person...This. It's a joke that he won that award in the first place. There are at least 10 guys in the SEC that are better than him
Those two missed fouls, probably, cost us the game. They were not just missed calls, but about as bad a missed calls as you will ever see in a BB game. That said, we, probably, would have missed the FT’s anyway. You can’t expect to win any game against a legitimate D1 opponent shooting 12-25 from the FT line. In all my years of playing BB, I never was on one team that shot less than 50% from the FT line in a game, and none of those players ended up playing at D1 schools. This and the charge not called when the dude ran over Herb.
The tournament is a different animal. One game season. Life on the line everyday. Can't base the season on one game even when it hurts When we lost to West Ky I thought the season was over.
I think he over achieved with the personnel that we had this year. I don’t think we have a go to guy in the clutch.I love Oats. And I believe in him. But he has to improve our half court offense with player/ball movement at times. And he has to know who’s hands to put the ball in with the game on the line. He cost us big time with that.
Come on man. A 75% free throw shooter was at the line multiple times late including the last two with 5 seconds left. I would take that every time. He missed every single one of them. This one is on Herb.Herb missed the free throws late. But he missed them bc Oats put the ball in his hands to make the play. That’s Oats fault. You put the ball in your best offensive players hands with the game on the line.
He may have over achieved. But this group has a guy. It’s JQ. That’s not questionable.I think he over achieved with the personnel that we had this year. I don’t think we have a go to guy in the clutch.
I don’t care what his percentages are. He’s not a finisher. He’s not a closer. He doesn’t need the ball there. Give me his percentages with the game on the line in big games. He touched it the last 3 possessions against Missouri...we didn’t have a chance. He’s not a good offensive player.Come on man. A 75% free throw shooter was at the line multiple times late including the last two with 5 seconds left. I would take that every time. He missed every single one of them. This one is on Herb.
Exactly...put the game in JQ's hand...our best offensive player....we need a stop on defense at the end of the game, put herb on him....why have Herb take it pretty much coast to coast on a gimp leg to probably shoot free throws he just missed? He may have over achieved. But this group has a guy. It’s JQ. That’s not questionable.
Exactly. It isn’t like we were dominate all year. We got some shots and some calls down the stretch that helped us extend our season. Not exactly a program strategy for the future!!!!!!Yeah games like that are the difference in a good or really good/great team.
This. Shot as bad as possible from 3 and ESPECIALLY free throw line. The fact they could do that badly and still go to OT in the S16 shows this team really crapped the bed.If they make literally one more ft in regulation and go 12-25 from the line which is still God awful, they win. How can anyone on here be blaming Oats? And the refs blown calls at the end cost us. This one isn't on Oats
I think as long as Oats is here, we will be a regular!Well, I have been saying for years on here that I wished Bama would have a BB team like we did was I was growing up in the 80’s and early 90’s. Well, we finally had that. Good seed. A team with a legitimate chance to win the whole tournament. Got lucky to play a lesser team in the sweet 16. And, deja vue/as usual, looked awful and lost. I shouldn’t complain. I got what I have been wishing for for MANY, MANY years. The toughest part is, unlike Bama football, us BB fans know you get very few opportunities to have a real chance like this, so it hurts A LOT more when you lose, because you realize that there is a very good chance you won’t have another one of these opportunities for a long time.
True, but even worse he had like 4 turnovers in a row when he touched the ball in the 1st half that helped spark our opponents rally.Shack was MIA tonight and he was on the floor!
I really like Oats. Like any coach, or human being, he is not perfect, but I am darn glad he is our coach. I hope you are right about being a regular. I always had that feeling back in the 80’s and early 90’s that we would be back the next season. I just am not as confident, presently, that we will have another opportunity anytime in the near future like this year. It is just so tough to do in college BB now(example, look at the Kentucky’s, Duke’s, and North Carolina’s this season). Regardless of recruiting rankings, hype, etc, you have to have your team jell just right. Outside of the Providence game in ‘87(which they just played too good for anyone to beat that night), this was our best chance in my lifetime of watching Bama BB(40 years). You just don’t know if that will happen until you see it over the course of a season. I am just very disappointed, because I know these opportunities are so rare for our BB team. I would have felt the same way even if we had lost in the finals.I think as long as Oats is here, we will be a regular!

But yet in every game that came down to a last shot he had the ball in his hands. I will never understand it.Herb was a great defender but an albatross on offense...his winning POY is a reflection of his defense only
Herb is a heck of a player, but tonight he payed like crap. Two quick fouls(just like the game before), but what really hurt was the 2-6 FT shooting, and taking outside shoots he darn well knows are not his forte. You can’t expect your conference player of the year to play like that and win a big game. But yet in every game that came down to a last shot he had the ball in his hands. I will never understand it.
Let’s see if it’s a trademark of oats’ coaching down the road...But yet in every game that came down to a last shot he had the ball in his hands. I will never understand it.
Herb Jones missed the final 18 3’s of his college career. And yet...Herb is a heck of a player, but tonight he payed like crap. I know what you mean. When I was growing up watching Bama BB in the 80’s and early 90’s we just couldn’t get past the sweet 16, even if we were the better team. It is just like a curse that haunts us. The difference in those games is that we didn’t lose to an 11 seed team shooting 12-25 from the FT line. That is just unreal for even an awful HS BB team.11-25 from line is just incredible. It is the latest chapter in Sweet Sixteen agony for Alabama. You could write a book about the stuff that has happened to Alabama at this point of the tourney.
Herb should have never had the ball at the end of regulation. No way. It is sad- not sure when another opportunity like this will present itself with all the main basketball powers being down. May be that Alabama is just not meant to ever make a Final Four.
We tend to have trouble with free throws and field goals at Alabama.
Yes. You are right. I go back to horse and buggy days. You know the FG kicker made every single kick this year right? And perfect on PATs
