TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With a light toss to his left, Tua Tagovailoa took another major step toward recovery. A week after breaking a bone in his throwing hand, the rising sophomore quarterback was back throwing to receivers Tuesday — albeit in a limited fashion.
Tagovailoa practiced away from the rest of the quarterbacks during individual drills, tossing the ball 10-15 yards to head athletic trainer Jeff Allen. During team drills, he threw a couple out passes to receivers but to not partake in any deep throws.
Still, it was an immensely encouraging sight for Alabama as the team wrapped up its fourth of 15 practices this spring.
During his press conference following practice, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said Tagovailoa has a positive attitude toward recovery. The head coach also praised the work of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Lyle Cain and the rest of Alabama’s medical staff for their ability to get Tagovailoa back out on the field.
“Tua was able to actually do stuff in practice today,” Saban said. “He was actually able to hand the ball off and grip the ball, throw the ball a little bit. It’s amazing the technology we have now and the expertise that our people have.”
