TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Spring practice was accompanied by fall weather on Wednesday, as Alabama worked out under cloudy, 49-degree weather. Players were dressed out in shirts, shorts and helmets for the second of 15 spring workouts.
Here are a few notes from the viewing period.
— Kalen DeBoer provided a double-digit list of unavailable players during his media session with reporters. To recap, here’s a look at who is out for the Tide.
Out for the spring
Alex Asparuhov, punter, freshman
David Bird, long snapper, junior
Bubba Hampton, wide receiver, redshirt freshman
Fatutoa Henry, linebacker, junior
Domani Jackson, cornerback, senior
Deontae Lawson, linebacker, redshirt senior
Danny Lewis Jr., tight end, redshirt junior
Keon Sabb, safety, redshirt junior
Limited
Justin Jefferson, linebacker, redshirt senior
Kadyn Proctor, offensive tackle, junior
James Smith, defensive tackle, junior
— In addition to that list, I did not see, offensive lineman Wilkin Formby or edge rusher Yhonzae Pierre during the viewing period.
— As expected, redshirt junior Ty Simpson led the quarterback group, followed by redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell. The quarterbacks were throwing far away from the media, but it looked as though they were managing a windy day and delivering nice balls to the receivers.
— Here’s the order when quarterbacks worked on hadoff drills with the running backs.
Ty Simpson —> Jam Miller
Austin Mack — > Richard Young
Keelon Russell — > Daniel Hill
Simpson — > Kevin Riley
Mack — > Dre Washington
Russell — > AK Dear
— With Formby absent and Proctor standing to the side in a black jersey, here’s what Alabama’s offensive line units looked like.
First unit: Arkel Anugwom, Olaus Alinen, Parker Brailsford, Jaeden Roberts and Casey Poe
Second unit: Jackson Lloyd, Kam Dewberry, Joseph Ionata, Geno VanDeMark, Micah DeBose
Third unit: Mal Waldrep, William Sanders, Roq Montgomery, Michael Carroll, Graham Roten
— Other reports had Carroll taking reps at right tackle and left with the second unit. The five-star freshman is listed at 6-foot-6, 315 pounds and has the versatility to play at multiple spots on the line.
— Qua Russaw led Alabama’s Wolf unit, followed by Noah Carter, Justin Hill, and walk-on Nolad Asberry. Jah-Marien Latham was not with the unit while I was watching. However, I did see him rejoin the Wolf position later in practice. Latham has brace on his left leg.
— LT Overton led Alabama’s defensive line followed by Jordan Renaud, Keon Keeley, Kelby Collins, Tim Keenan III and Jeremiah Beamon. Steve Bolo Mboumoua was also with the unit, but I didn’t see him in the drill when I was taking the order.
— Zabien Brown led the cornerbacks and was followed by Cam Calhoun, walk-on Chase Davis, Red Morgan and Dijon Lee Jr. One thing that stood out is Lee's size. The five-star freshman looks every bit of the 6-foot-4, 197 pounds he's listed at. He also moves like a cornerback during drills. He's one to watch for sure.
— DaShawn Jones was working with the safeties far from the media-viewing area. He’ll be competing for the starting Husky role.
