It's official.
What it means: Taulia Tagovailoa to transfer from Alabama
With Taulia Tagovailoa entering the transfer portal, I wanted to address the quarterback situation and a few other items pertaining to the position. As I stated, the writing has been on the wall for a long time that Taulia would transfer. We assumed that would be after the NFL Draft, and it was. With Taulia now officially entering the portal, what does the quarterback position look like going into the summer months? I’ve provided some analysis to a few questions that have come to mind.
Who’s on the roster at quarterback
- Mac Jones - RS Junior - Graduate - 12 games in 2019
- Bryce Young - Freshman - Five-star
- Paul Tyson - RS Freshman - 1 game in 2019
What we know: Mac Jones is the guy
It’s been said countless times, Jones is the guy at quarterback. I see this as a good thing. There are few programs in the country with a quarterback who has Jones' combination of leadership and ability. He should undoubtedly be able to command this offense to the highest level. Sources tell me, there is no quarterback battle right now. It’s Mac Jones, period.
Biggest question we have: How good is Bryce Young?
This is not a bad question. How good is Young? We missed seeing him during spring football, and while the current day and age of media allows coaches to provide install and provide direction for players, Young did not take a snap with players on the roster. What he missed from spring ball is going against a live defense and building continuity with his teammates. He’ll get there, but not having spring ball will obviously make the jump to college football take a little bit longer.
Paul Tyson takes a step forward
No one is talking or wants to talk about Tyson. The truth is, he’s the only pro-style quarterback on the roster and is now 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. Tyson moved up on the roster this offseason. He has a very high IQ and now knows Sarkisian’s system. Tyson is someone I see on the rise.
Does Mac Jones have two more seasons at Alabama?
Currently, Mac Jones is a redshirt junior, and he’s a graduate as mentioned. What do you think about Jones staying for two more seasons at Alabama? It seems unlikely in my opinion. To me, there are two scenarios: Bryce Young beats Jones out and he transfers, or Jones drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Where will Taulia end up?
What’s your take on this? Anywhere in Florida seems likely, right? Do you think he’s SEC good? Perhaps… ending up at Ole Miss? Who knows, but South Florida and even Florida State seem like good landing spots. Obviously, even Miami.
Needs for 2021
Will Alabama take a quarterback in this class? Drake Maye was committed, then decommitted and choose North Carolina. There does not seem to be a dire need to get a quarterback from 2021 unless Mac Jones leaves after this season, which would mean that only Bryce Young and Paul Tyson are left on the depth chart. Without question, the need for a quarterback from the Class of 2022 is of the upmost importance. Tanner Bailey, a four-star out of Gordo, Ala., was just offered by the Tide. Bone says Alabama will take one quarterback. But who? And do any of the targets out there fit the criteria needed?
Possible landing spots for Taulia?
Did some research on some surrounding schools in the Florida area and also threw in Maryland, LSU, and Oregon. Remember, Orgeron recruited Taulia and as you can see below, LSU does not have many QBs on the roster right now.
