Football 🏈 Notes from Alabama's open practice (March 6)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — For the first time since the fall of 2021, Alabama opened its doors to the media for practice. Reporters were given roughly 30 minutes to observe practice Wednesday, as players donned helmets and shorts for their second of 15 spring workouts.

Here are a few notes from the viewing period.

First off, there was music blaring through practice, which is a change from the Nick Saban era. It definitely seemed to add more energy to the workout.

— Another change I noticed was that during an early period in the practice, a few position coaches remained stationary at a particular drill while players from different position groups rotated in and out. The practice was moving at a faster pace than what I was used to, so it was hard to keep up at times.

— When I was watching the quarterbacks, they were working in pairs. Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson threw to receivers in the first group, while Austin Mack and Dylan Lonergan threw beside each other in the second group.

— Alabama’s first-team offensive line from left to right: Elijah Pritchett, Tyler Booker, James Brockermeyer, Jaeden Roberts, Wilkin Formby.

— Alabama’s second team offensive line from left to right: Naquil Betrand, Olaus Alinen, Parker Brailsford, Roq Montgomery, Miles McVay.

— Colin Hitschler is coaching Alabama's safeties while Maurice Linguist is coaching the cornerbacks.

— When Alabama cornerbacks were working in individual drills the order was: Jaylen Mbakwe, Domani Jackson, Zavier Mincey, Zabien Brown and Jahlil Hurley.

— Alabama’s safeties were working in pairs when I was watching. Malachi Moore and Keon Sabb were the first part and were followed by Devonta Smith and Bray Hubbard, Red Morgan and Dre Kirkpatrick, Peyton Woodyard and Caleb McDougle. Tony Mitchell was out there and participating in drills, but I didn’t see him in the order when I was writing that down.

— Alabama tight end C.J. Dippre was working off to the side in a black jersey.

— While the tight ends were catching passes the order was: Ty Lockwood, Danny Lewis Jr., Robbie Ouzts, Josh Cuevos, Coby McNeil, Peyton Fox, Adam Thorsland.

— The receivers were working far from where the media was positioned. I didn't get a good look at them, but it has been reported elsewhere that freshman tight end Caleb Odom was working over there instead of with the tight ends.

— Justice Haynes led the running backs followed by Jam Miller, Richard Young and Daniel Hill.

— Redshirt freshman Keon Keeley was working with the defensive linemen. He was at the back of the pack and received a lot of coaching from Freddie Roach. One thing that stood out is that Roach didn't dog Keeley when he messed up in a drill. Instead, he calmly took him to the side and demonstrated how things were supposed to be done.

— When I was watching sled drills, the order of the defensive line was: Hunter Osborne, Timm Keenan III, Khurtis Perry, Isaia Faga, Jeremiah Beaman, Damon Payne, Tim Smith, LT Overton, Jordan Renaud, Jah-Marien Latham, James Smith, Edric Hill and Keon Keeley.

— When I was watching the outside linebackers they were working in pairs. The first two were Quandarrius Robinson and Keanu Koht. After that, it was Yhonzae Pierre and Qua Russaw followed by Jayshawn Ross and Lane Whisenhunt.

— Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell led the inside linebackers followed by Justin Jefferson and Jeremiah Alexander.

— Former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry was in attendance.

Hoops 🏀 SEC Basketball Tournament Scenarios for Alabama

Since we are 11 SEC games from the tournament seeding being complete, it’s a good time to break down the likely seeds Alabama will have.

All likely scenarios requires Alabama to win on Saturday vs Arkansas.

Here’s the remaining schedules for the teams in the running for a top 4 seed.

Tennessee: @USCe, vs UK
Alabama: vs Ark
Auburn: vs UGA
South Carolina: vs UT, @ Miss St
UK: vs Vandy, @ UT
UF: vs Vandy

Alabama really needs Tennessee to win out to prevent any wild chaos ensuing. That’ll likely keep Kentucky out of the top 4 seeds and Alabama would be the 2 seed.

Every likely scenario has Alabama finishing as the #2 seed (with a win) as they own the tiebreaker over South Carolina and Auburn.

The ONLY two likely scenarios that would keep Alabama (with a win vs Ark) out of the top 4 seeds include:

Tennessee goes 0-2
South Carolina goes 1-1
Auburn beats UGA
Kentucky goes 2-0

In that scenario there would be a 5 way tie for 1st and based on tie breakers, Alabama would be 5th.

The other scenario:

South Carolina goes 2-0
Tennessee goes 0-2
UK goes 2-0
Auburn defeats UGA

In that scenario, there would be a 4 way tie where Alabama would finish 5th. They need to avoid any tie breaker scenario with UT AND UK due to being 0-3 against them.

Now the most likely scenario to happen:
Tennessee finishes 1-1
South Carolina finishes 2-0/1-1
Bama wins
Auburn wins
UK goes 1-1

It doesn’t matter if So Car goes 2-0 or 1-1, as long as Tennessee doesn’t lose out and Alabama will finish in the top 4 with a win vs Arkansas.

Football Recruiting DeBoer offers 4⭐️ Class of 2026 Safety

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer offered four-star Class of 2026 safety Bralan Womack on Wednesday. Womack was on campus today.

"It’s an offer I’ve been waiting and working for so receiving the offer was very exciting but it’s still hard work and continuing to get better.

On his conversation with DeBoer: "We just sat down and exchanged backgrounds and talked about life... We didn’t really talk much about football just about life but he said he loves how I play unselfish football."

Hoops 🏀 Thoughts on Alabama’s Loss to Tennessee

What an incredibly fun atmosphere at Coleman Coliseum last night! Even though it ended in a loss, that’s the best atmosphere I can remember for a home game.

Tennessee is a just a better team and they’re elite in every facet. Why? They’re one of the most experienced teams in the country with a lot of talent. With that being said, Alabama still had a prime opportunity to win the game and couldn’t hit shots down the stretch.

Overall, I thought Alabama’s defense was solid and kept them in the game for stretches in the game. The foul trouble Alabama was in became too much for a team that has little quality frontcourt depth. Tennessee ended up shooting more and making more threes, which was not something I expected either.

I thought it was a very good game by two teams that can/will make it to the 2nd weekend. You always hate your team losing these kind of close, hard fought games, but that’s sports. Sometimes the other team is just better, and Tennessee has proven they’re just better.

What’s next for Alabama? @ Florida and vs Arkansas. If they split these last 2, then they’re all but guaranteed a top 4 seed. An SEC title isn’t out of the question, but would obviously require some help.

Hoops 🏀 Alabama is still a No. 4 seed on Lunardi's bracket

No. 16 seed overall, Lunardi also now has Auburn joining Alabama on the No. 4-line.

Alabama's metrics:
NET: No. 7 (Quad 1: 4-9, Quad 2: 7-1) Florida moved up into the top 30 in the NET, making Alabama's home victory over the Gators a Quad 1 win.
KenPom: No. 9 (No. 1 in adjusted offensive efficiency, No. 106 in adjusted defensive efficiency)
Torvik: No. 12

At 35 years the voice of the tide. Last season just sucked with Chis Steward. It was like hear someone calling a baseball game. I don’t understand why they would fire the voice of the tide. There has been so many changes heading into next season.
