Hoops 🏀 Thoughts on Alabama’s Gritty Win Against Arkansas

In March, teams are typically either playing for their tournament lives or for seeding. Arkansas has zero hope of making the tournament, so they’ve been playing with nothing to lose of late and been playing good ball. Alabama has looked deflated since the loss to Tennessee and today was no different.

A lackluster performance majority of the game led to being down by as much as 15 in the game and took a heroic effort from Latrell Wrightsell to force OT. They did not lead all of regulation and got their first lead a minute into OT. In OT, Wrightsell and Sam Walters took over and led them to victory.

It is concerning seeing the offense, what has carried them all season, be so lackluster the past week or two. It just looks like guys are scared to shoot open shots and Oats has said consistently that if you pass up an open shot, it typically leads to a turnover. They just look like they are playing with zero confidence collectively. The defense was better today and carried them in the second half, but if the offense was one, they’d have won by 20-30. Maybe one day they’ll play another complete game.

Now it’s March time and it’s put up or shut up time. Alabama will be the 3 seed in the tournament, which could be a UF/UK/UT path to a title which seems highly unlikely. They are likely locked in as a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament, but a couple wins in the SECT could make the 3 seed within reach. Regardless, this team has a team that can make the final four, or lose the first round. They’re just a mixed bag and you don’t know what to expect. I didn’t expect them to make the Sweet 16 this year, but if they make the second weekend it’s a massive success considering where they were expected to be.

Time to enjoy the most enjoyable time of year!

Hoops 🏀 Nate Oats Friday presser

Nate Oats opened the presser calling Saturday's contest a "character game."
Oats said he thought Alabama led the Tennessee loss carryover into the Florida game.
Oats said Khalif Battle is having the best four-game run of the
Alabama will honor all six seniors on Saturday regardless of if they're coming back. The only player out of eligibility is Aaron Estrada.
Oats said students still on campus should pack the gym on Saturday: "We have an 11 a.m. tip... you can make it to the beach in plenty of time."
Oats is saving any conversations with the remaining five seniors for after the season."They're all more than welcome to come back."
More on Battle: "One we have to keep him out the paint without fouling him." "He's also the guy who shoots the most efficient shots.
On many of the senior class members being transfers: "I think the days where you see a really high-level player stick around for four years, you're not gonna see that." Said Alabama's players
Oats said Rylan Griffen's MRI revealed a calf strain and the results were better than expected. Griffen is day-to-day and Oats said he isn't sure when Griffen will return.
On Director of Scouting & Analytics Adam Bauman: "He started diving in, taught himself out to code. He works really hard."
On Latrell Wrightsell's status: "As far as I can tell he's at a full green light... As long as I get great feedback tomorrow I think he's full go."
On the Arkansas game being high scoring: "If Arkansas likes to run, we like to run."

Hoops 🏀 An interesting hoops graphic

I'm a big fan of the charts Evan Miya does and this one stuck out to me. Alabama has a high floor and a low ceiling in the NCAAT based on its results this season. While anything can happen, I'm not nearly as concerned about Alabama being a victim of a No. 5 vs. No. 12 or No. 4 vs. No. 13 upset as I am about what will happen in the round of 32.
