Additional secondary help could still be on the way

Along with the recent addition of Louisiana-Lafayette cornerback Trey Amos, Alabama remains in contention for UAB transfer safety Jaylen Key, who visited campus Monday. Key has visited Florida State and Ole Miss and was originally set to visit Ohio State and Oregon but has since canceled those trips.

Key started eight games over 13 appearances last season, registering 60 tackles, including 4.5 stops for a loss and a sack. He also recorded three interceptions, a pass breakup and two forced fumbles. According to Pro Football Focus, he held opposing passers to a 56.8 NFL quarterback rating, allowing 23 receptions for 273 yards and no touchdowns on 33 balls thrown his way. Key, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, is capable of playing both deep safety or dropping down to the box.

Proposed Rule Changes for Next Year:

The NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee on Friday proposed a rules change for the 2023-24 season to the legal guarding position on block/charge scenarios involving defenders around the basket.

Under the recommendation, a defender would have to be in position to draw a charge at the time an offensive player plants his foot to go airborne to attempt a field goal. If the defender arrives after the offensive player plants a foot to launch toward the basket, officials would be instructed to call a block when contact occurs between the two players.

A secondary defender still would have to be outside the restricted-area arc to legally draw a charge.

Currently, defenders must be in position to draw a charge before the offensive player goes airborne.

All rules proposals must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss men's basketball recommendations via a virtual call June 8.

Rules committee members made the proposal after receiving feedback from the membership that too many charges are being called on these types of plays. Through the years, block/charge calls have been among the toughest for officials to judge.

The rules committee thinks the change would give officials more time to officiate these plays.

"Our goal is to try to reduce the number of charges that are called," said Rick Barnes, the committee chair and coach at Tennessee. "We want to give more time to the offensive player to adjust to defensive player movement and reduce the hard collisions that are taking place."

Other rule proposals:

  • An optional rule would allow for preloaded/live video to be transmitted to the bench area. This has been an experimental rule for the past two years.
  • Officials would be able to review goaltending/basket interference calls during the next media timeout to ensure the calls were accurate, as long as the official calls it on the floor. If there is a foul on the shooter while the ball is in the air with a goaltend/basket interference, the review would be immediate to properly adjudicate the potential free throws. More five minute reviews, just what we need.
  • Nonstudent bench personnel would be allowed to serve as peacekeepers when an altercation occurs.
  • Under two minutes, when a coach requests an out-of-bounds play be reviewed, that team would be charged a timeout if the original call is not overturned. I have a better rule change. Allow the Coach to have two challenges a game and unless he loses the challenge he keeps his two. If he doesn't challenge the call on the floor stands. That would mean that the last two minutes of the game does not last thirty minutes.
  • Anytime the ball hits the rim and the offense retains possession in the front court, the shot clock would reset to 20 seconds.
  • If a player is called for a foul and instant replay officials see that the foul is a direct result of a flagrant 1 or flagrant 2 foul against the player who was originally assessed a foul, officials would be allowed to remove the foul on the player who was flagrantly fouled.
  • A timeout would be able to be granted when a player has possession of the ball even though the player is airborne. (An example would be a player grabbing a loose ball and calling timeout before landing out of bounds.)
  • If a player commits three flagrant 1 fouls in a game, the player would be disqualified from the game.
  • Players would be allowed to wear numbers 0-99.
  • Schools would no longer have to submit a waiver for players to wear religious headwear, provided it is safe for competition.
  • Red and amber lights would be allowed on the backboard. Why don't we just put a Christmas Tree behind the backboard.

The rules committee also approved experimental rules for the 2023-24 season:

  • To continue the experimental rule with the standard media timeout format in the second half (first dead ball under 17 minutes, 14, 11, eight and four) for any interested conference, as well as in the National Invitation Tournament. This is what we need, an extra TV Timeout every game. This one change adds four minutes and 8 commercial slots to every game.
  • In the NIT, widening the lane to 16 feet.

Wilhelm Breidenbach Solid backup Center enters Portal

Wilhelm Breidenbach a solid 6-10 backup Center from Nebraska has entered the portal. I don't know if we have any interest, but he would be an insurance policy. I don't think he would ever play in front of Pringle and he would be a wasted scholarship if Charles Bediako decides to return, but at the stage we probably need some insurance.

Lance Ware, a role playing forward from Kentucky is also out there for the picking, but again I don't think he could ever be anything but a backup player.

I don't know if we are to late to get in on Grant Nelson a 6'11" forward from North Dakota State, but he would seem to be a good answer to back up Pringle.

There are just not many great bigs in the portal. I would like to see us get one big and one that could play point, in case Sears and JQ decide to move on.

Murphy’s Law!

Bringing in Montana to pitch the 7th inning today after pitching two complete games in the last two days finally caught up with him! We now head to the SEC tournament with a star pitcher throwing in a game that had no meaning!
We were going to be the fifth seed no matter what!
Why did he take Salter out? She was pitching a pretty good game! What does that show her of his confidence in her pitching?
What has Torrance shown all year that showed she could be trusted?
Losing a three run lead in the last inning to Mississippi is inexcusable!
We run the bases like a T-league team!
Our fielding knowledge is atrocious!
Sorry for this long rant but his overall coaching leaves me scratching my head!
ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Patrick Murphy is an idiot....

Leading Ole Miss 4-1 going into 5th with Salter pitching a one hitter and had walked only one.
Puts Torrance in ( I have seen better pitchers in high school/ she should never see the field in the SEC) and she gives up back to back home runs and then Fouts is forced to come in after pitching both Friday and Saturday and Ole Miss gets 3 straight hits off of her and wins 5-4.
No reason to pull Salter. Just stupid. And what does that one loss do?
Knocks them out of a bye in the SEC tourney and may cost them from from even hosting a regional for the first time in over 20 years.
Murphy placing bets like Bo? That kind of move makes me wonder.
