So much for an Alabama bias.

In his first SEC Media Days as part of ESPN’s broadcast team, Nick Saban isn’t showing any favoritism for his former team. In fact, the legendary head coach doesn’t even have the Crimson Tide in this year’s SEC Championship Game.

Hoops 🏀 A couple of noteworthy Alabama stats from The Athletic

Alabama has the most Division I minutes of any team in the SEC with 21,639. The Crimson Tide has six players who have played over 2,000 minutes in their college careers:
Mark Sears
Grant Nelson
Clifford Omoruyi
Chris Youngblood
Houston Mallette
Latrell Wrightsell Jr.

Shouldn't come as a surprise but Alabama also returns the most career made 3-pointers of any SEC roster with 1,060. Kentucky is second with 1,033.

Alabama is slumping in recruiting

We all knew that things would change once Saban retired; however. no one expected this. With June almost up, Alabama's recruiting has suffered, absent Saban and we are currently rated a lowly third in the country. Of Course there is no way to compete against tOSU, who has demonstrated that they have an unlimited NIL budget, having paid an estimated $7,000,000 to lure two Alabama Starters and a third string QB.

The problem with paying big money for Freshmen recruits is that even the best Freshman seldom is ready to play at the college level and these highly touted players are seldom willing to pay the price of sitting a year and developing. If the player is really good as a freshman, they are going straight to the Portal Market Place and selling to the highest bidder. No longer do you get a player for three years before they declare for the draft, as they are now on the market after the last game of the season. Personally, I am interested in the players that come from the Portal than recruits, as recruits will seldom play their third year at the school where they enroll. In my mind, I think in the present enviroment I would rather have a four star that comes in knowing he might have to practice and develop in the first year than a five star that comes in and pouts because he is not in the starting lineup on day one.

I don't blame Caleb Downs for leaving Bama after year one and taking the money, as Caleb will be an All American wherever he goes. The days are over where a head coach at Michigan can take players, keep them on the roster for four years and win a national title in their fourth year. If a player is not starting in year one, he is going to be gone in year two, so recruiting does no matter, if you are signing five star players.

Message to Ohio State. Pay millions to these recruits to get them on campus. Football is now played with 22 starters and one football. I am going to concentrate on building relationships with the players, so that I will be in play the second year, when they hit the transfer portal.

Bama WR recruiting and who will commit next

As I projected, WR Travis Smith committed to Tennessee yesterday.

I'm not sure how much Bama was really in it for Smith over the last several weeks as there wasn't much of a push from the staff due to all of the confidence they would land the real prize at WR...Caleb Cunningham. Cunningham is a much better prospect and more of a sure thing and true playmaker at WR.

That really leaves only two potential WRs left on the board...Kaliq Lockett (out of Texas) and Derek Meadows (out of Vegas).

I do not expect Meadows to join the good guys. And, I'm fairly confident the staff will not take another WR in the '25 class unless it is Lockett. That's a clear testament to just how much talent the staff currently has in Tuscaloosa as well as the addition of Lotzeir and Cunningham in the '25 class. Speaking of Lotzeir...he's probably the most underrated prospect in the nation. Seriously.

The momentum of this class continued today with the commitment of 4-star OT Ty Haywood, which makes the OL haul in the '25 class absolutely sick. Like WR, I don't expect the staff to take another OL unless its OT Malachi Goodman (New Jersey). But again, I think the '25 OL bus is now full.

So Who's Next?

With 22 current commits, the '25 class is quickly filling up. But there are still a few needs left to fill. One of those needs is at RB where the Tide has only one commit at this time (Turbo Rogers).

I question whether or not Rogers will sign with the Tide in December as he was a target of the previous staff and committed way back on 6/2/23. Because of this, RB is the big need right now. But fear not as DeBoer and staff quickly identified Akylin Dear and they have been laser focused on bringing him to Tuscaloosa.

Football 🏈 Alabama lands a commitment from elite WR Caleb Cunningham

"It was hard," he said of his decision and leaning toward Auburn for most of the summer. "When I went on the official visit, the Bama coaches told me they were gonna change that, and they definitely did. Looking at getting to the next level, Bama is definitely gonna get me to the league I'm looking at my future."

"The competition ... I want to get good coaching every day to get me where I need to be and everybody is gonna come in and compete and work," Cunningham detailed. "Bama is Bama. Everyone is elite on the team and that'll get you ready. One of the big reasons I picked 'Bama is everyone on the field is a competitor; It's not gonna be easy like high school. I love the culture there. The culture is great, the fan base is great. Bama made it feel like home for real."
