Football 🏈 Kalen DeBoer praises Alabama's game-changer on special teams

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kalen DeBoer took part of his opening statement Monday to single out a player he called a “game-changer” for Alabama so far this season.

It wasn’t quarterback Jalen Milroe, who has 14 total touchdowns, or freshman receiver Ryan Wiliams, who is averaging 28.5 yards per catch. DeBoer didn’t praise linebacker Jihaad Campbell’s team-high 28 tackles or edge rusher Que Robinson’s trio of sacks either.

Instead, he gushed over his punter.

Football 🏈 GIF breakdown: Alabama's 'takers' roll up their sleeves against Wisconsin

At Alabama, they’re called takers.

JaMarcus Shephard doesn’t refer to his position group as receivers. The first-year position coach claims that label is too passive for how he wants his unit to play. Instead, the Crimson Tide’s wideouts are known as “takers.”

“Being a taker is aggressive. It’s an aggressive way. It’s an aggressive lifestyle,” Shepherd explained during a February interview with Tide 100.9. “It’s how you go after the football. It’s how you go after blocks. It’s how you conduct yourself every single day on that football field.”

So far, the Tide’s takers have lived up to their name.

Alabama’s wideouts are well-known for their big-play ability, but the unit has also rolled up its sleeves for some dirty work this season. According to Pro Football Focus, the Tide’s highest-graded run blockers the past two weeks have been receivers takers. Ryan Williams led Alabama with a 78.2 run-blocking grade against South Florida, while Germie Bernard posted a sterling 87.2 mark against Wisconsin.

The Tide piled up 184 yards on 34 carries against the Badgers over the weekend. According to PFF, 128 of those yards came on a combined 20 attempts to the outside of the right and left ends. That’s an average of 6.4 yards a pop on running plays where the takers helped spring blocks.

Here’s a look back at how the Tide’s wideouts cleared the way for some of those runs.

Football 🏈 Kalen DeBoer provides injury updates on four Alabama players

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama is slightly banged up heading into its open week. During his Monday press conference head coach Kalen DeBoer provided an injury update on four players following his team’s 42-10 victory over Wisconsin over the weekend.

Football 🏈 Is it time to bench Bryce Young?

I’ve said before that I think he’s the most talented QB to play at Alabama. I thought he would do well in the NFL, my only concern was the obvious, his lack of size. Now the Panthers roster is one of if not the worst in the NFL but he’s not making good decisions with the football, something I aways thought was a strength of his.

So is it time to bench him. On one had I believe in letting a young player go through the growing pains, on the other his confidence could be diminished to the point he never recovers.

My five keys to Bama being a legit contender

1) OL plays like last six minutes of USF game. The running game will develop if they play like that for a full game. Bama has back field talent if they get some blocking.
2) DB's / Safety / CB's better not cover the deep ball like they did against USF or great passing QB's will throw for 6 TD's
3) Key to Bama offense is finding and connecting with Ryan Williams in open space down field. Kid is good enough to be a Heisman contender in December if Bama get the ball to him.
4) Stop stupid yellow flags.
5) More pressure on the QB. Nose tackle did a great job, but did not see much pressure on QB other than that.

JMHO......ANYONE ELSE?
