Here are a couple of notes I picked up heading into the beginning of fall camp:
— Alabama is coming off an extremely impressive showing during summer workouts. According to a source close to the program, Nick Saban was blown away by the players and even gave upperclassmen an extra weekend off before camp started. That’s not a usual occurrence.
— Five-star freshman Eyabi Anoma was one of the biggest stars of summer workouts. The Jack linebacker has put on some weight this summer and is now north of 250 pounds. Don't be surprised if he's a big weapon on defense by the end of the season. Here’s what fellow linebacker Anfernee Jennings had to say about him during SEC Meetings.
“Eyabi, he’s a great player. We haven’t really got in pads yet, but so far, he’s doing a great job in the conditioning program, working out, learning the playbook. Just trying to learn the game from the older guys and learn as much as he can, so I’m looking forward to seeing him.”
— Another five-star player to watch is Jaylen Waddle. According to a source, the 5-foot-10, 177-pound receiver was described as “not from this planet” by offensive lineman Jedrick Wills. That’s pretty high praise, considering Wills is a bit of a freak himself.
— Outside of Skyler DeLong, Patrick Surtain Jr. is probably the incoming freshman in the best position to grab a starting role. The tools are all there, so it could come down to how fast he picks up the playbook. A source also told me Josh Jobe could be in contention for early playing time but said he might take more time to develop than Surtain.
— The two big surprises come on the defensive line. JUCO transfer Tevita Musika looks to be the real deal and could be a nice piece at the nose tackle position. Musika, 6-foot-1, 338 pounds, is Alabama’s biggest defensive lineman and could eat up space similar to what Terrance Cody did at the position.
The other surprise comes in freshman Christian Barmore. According to a source, coaches were really impressed with the 6-foot-5, 292-pound defensive lineman’s physique. He’s a dark-horse candidate to help out in terms of depth.
