Baseball ⚾️ Game thread: No. 6 Alabama at Memphis

Didn't keep up with this thread as it was clear enough 5 minutes in that Memphis was going to play way over their heads like their whole basketball career depended on it. Meanwhile we clearly didn't expect much of a fight tonight and never really seemed into the game mentally.

We brought a game worse than what we brought to Iona against a team full of crazy talented individuals that hadn't really been a team all season.

They were wild and out of control and every single time it worked out for them. Every wild shot that didn't go in went straight to another Memphis player. Even their mistakes worked out.

Just not our night.

Hopefully a lot of tape to coach some players up as we'll see the same sort of game plan against us with UK and LSU and probably 2 or 3 other SEC teams.

I thought tonight was the first game where we really missed the toughness of guys like Herb and Petty. They got in our face one on one and we didn't have much for it and couldn't get stops to slow the bleeding when it mattered.

JD didn't score until deep into the second half. Quin looked hung over most of the game. Shack was bullied a bit and big boyed at times. And we had no one that could keep their big in check when we needed it.

When we lost the game in the second half Oats wouldn't call timeouts. I would have burned them all trying to slow the momentum in any way I could. We watched them put up a crazy run while our whole team was out of sorts. That 2 or 3 minutes really cost us the game. That was on Oats. He saved the timeouts then didn't use one on our 5 second call late when there was a glimmer of hope.

Arguing with y’all is like arguing with my 4yr old lol… we are a dang good team. But you don’t see some chinks in the armor then you’re turning a blind eye. I just want to win every game haha. Y’all jump on folks back around here like a pack of wolves lol. I’m not saying the sky is falling but rather it’s partly cloudy right now RTR guys

Just beat two final four teams… 8-2 with the toughest schedule in the country. My goodness
It’s not about losing. It’s how you lose. Being out hustled. Being out played to the loose balls. Its just like loosing to UCLA last year. It’s not 2 good wins. Or 3 good wins. It is a Sprint to pulling off 6 wins in a row to be a National Champion!!!!

Winning every game is literally not possible unless you just have a generational team. So if by chinks in the armor you mean we don’t have a generational team then I absolutely agree. We’ll take some lumps. The goal is to get a top 4 seed and get hot in the tournament. These type games will happen occasionally in basketball

We out hustled and outplayed UCLA last year. Shot under 50 percent from free throw line and lost. Period.

Shouldn't schedule like that if you're gonna carry a three day hangover.
Find me a team in the NCAA that could win out West, then win that Houston slugfest, and then beat that Memphis team that took the court tonight and that's a final 4 team hands down. You guys are quickly dismissing how well Memphis played tonight. I dare say the next time they face a stretch of games like this will be in March. Not happy with the end result either but this team is better for it.

Did you ever stop to think that our guys just came off and very emotional and physical game that happened to end around 11:30 PM on Saturday night? Coupled with a travel day on Monday and game on Tuesday? Believe it or not, even though these are young college athletes, that can take a toll on you.

Absolutely. This is UCLA. This is any game after the first round where we play and coach poorly and go home. Say what you want, but writing off such losses to it being basketball is the difference between where we've been and where we all want this team to go.

2-1 in those three games. Nothing wrong with the scheduling

It's mid-December. Not March. Everything is different in March. No comparison.

Not at all. Losing this game with how they played, went, and hit at the foul line would be a downer but fine. Leaving runway for alley-oop one after another and the offensive rebounds we give up is not looking good. If you're suggesting we are a sweet sixteen team only, then we are in agreement that this is how we should play every few games.

That is not True. But when we want to think we are part of the ELITE in Basketball, you have to go on the road and BEAT struggling 5-4 teams. And we didn’t.
Look around college basketball. Nobody is above a bad night except maybe Baylor. The “elite” that you speak of drop games too

Even if our expectations are a bit high, if y'all don't see our lack of presence around the rim you are not seeing things correctly. Two consecutive games. This is a problem for us. It will be our Achilles heel unless we change dramatically.

Memphis is much better than their record indicates. Thought Bama played tired tonight. Know that is a lot for some to grasp.

This is a very talented Memphis team. Don’t let the record fool you. There has been a lot of turmoil inside the locker room at Memphis between younger guys and older guys. Penny made the right lineup changes tonight which he has had problems with trying to get everyone minutes and keep kids happy. Wasn’t the case tonight. Memphis has the chance to make a deep run in tourney.

Bama fell behind despite not looking like they really wanted to be there. They fought back and got into the game. A loss is good every now and then to get things in perspective and focused. This won’t be a bad loss at the end of season. Bama will be just fine. No reason to panic

When Nova steamrolled everybody (including Bama) on their way to the 17-18 title they had regular season losses at Butler, @ Providence, and home losses to St Johns and Creighton.
Yes it’s just the game of basketball. Duke went and beat Gonzaga in a Great game then turned around as the #1 team and lost to unranked Ohio state. Purdue looked like the clear best team in the country, got to #1, lost to Rutgers. It just happens in basketball. It’s a sport where home court can play a huge role in momentum. You get a capable and motivated underdog that catches fire and it’s like trying to stop a train. There’s a reason nobody goes undefeated and it’s a sport made out of upsets

Memphis has the roster to beat any team at home on the right night. If I recall, we were 4-3 at some point after exams last season with 3 losses to unranked teams. We know the 3 ball isn't going to always fall for us, but we scored 78 on a "rough" night and still attempted 33-3s, something Iona was able to limit us from in the earlier loss. We scored 66 on the road at Arkansas as the #6 team last year.

Let’s try to remember several weeks back we were going to be really happy with winning 2 out of 3 against Gonzaga, Houston and Memphis. And yes we thought we might have this kind of game against Gonzaga, but instead we are having it tonight.
I will say this I do think in the future even with this Oats system we might just need a beast inside and beast I mean a lot of weight and can fight for rebounds. I love Bediako and think he’s been good, but just need someone that can fight inside.
I've been saying this for a few years now. We could have a fire sale with guards and still have enough left over. We need a Dennis Rodman type rebounder.

was it fatigue? We were out hustled in a ridiculous way. Our shots werent falling. We were throwing the ball away. We were missing easy shots close to the rim. We couldnt get a rebound. Our defense was lazy as well.

Memphis is one of the longest teams I can remember playing. We just about got lob-dunked out of the building.
