*** NCAAT vs NOTRE DAME THREAD***

Oats said JQ was the only player that showed up for voluntary shoot around last night… say what you want about having VOLUNTARY shoot around but…. I think it pretty much triple confirms all of my thoughts about the mentality of this team
I wouldn’t blame the kids. Oats has thrown them under the bus after every loss this year. Can’t get buy in like that.

Oats didn't throw up bricks, dribble the ball of of his foot, get it stolen, let guards blow by them, not follow their shots, etc. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
No/ but be recruited virtually every one of them and coached them every day in practice.

The best thing that happened to this team since December is the season ending today. This team went to Seattle and played like a contender and then after that the wheels fell off. Never seen a group play so bad together. Something went wrong with this group and it never got fixed. I’m just glad I won’t be seeing them play again.

But you can teach defensive position and help defense ..

You can alter your defensive approach when a player like ND’s Ryan is going off

You can teach your ball handlers to dribble down the middle of the court so when you do you have two options, left or right, to throw a pass there

You can teach players not to leave their feet without knowing where they will pass the ball.. teams figured JD out and JD was good for multiple giveaways a game

you can yank a player out of the game for allowing someone to dribble down the middle of the defense and dunk ( this defensive prowess <tongue in cheek> has been evident since the first AU game in ttown to this last game vs ND)

the team did not improve. Period. End of story.
That’s coaching!

I can. But the coaching staff looked like a bunch of buffoons…

This team on paper was much more talented than Notre Dame and Rutgers, who would've have beaten us too.
Paper hero!! This team had no individual talent outside JQ, ellis, and sparks from bediako. 0. Any other coach and its a losing record. all day every day.

Not going to argue the same ole shit. Regardless of oats place in it. I’m sure you played sports atleast at Hs level like myself and maybe had similar experience…. I was a part of teams that wanted to be together constantly and eat sleep breathed baseball and I was also part of teams, one of which was the most talented I ever played on, that had dissension and didn’t want to be around the facility outside of practice/games. This bama team showed a ton of signs of the latter and regardless of your thoughts about oats part in that I don’t think it can be debated this team sucked from that standpoint

did you see Ellis blow off the coaching staff after he made a 3 that was called off bc of Gurley foul? Oats and the defensive assistant wanted to tell him something and he literally held his hand up and waved them off. That’s our leader…. And that’s a problem

Im with you. Oats can take some of the blame for the lack of half court offense. That said im not on the floor and idk whether or not Oats is calling sets or if they are ignoring him or whatever. But at the end of the day you cannont coach lack of effort or make somebody a leader that doesnt want it. Weve got too many "me" players. To me JD is our only guard that looks to pass first. But at least theirs effort there. Hes the type of guard that needs to be in an active half court offense not just a set a pick at the top of the key and bulldoze into the paint to throw up a prayer or make a tough pass outside. Bediako improved throughout the year. Gary gave effort. But outside of those three theirs just lack of effort and a team first attitude. JQ will be a good pro as soon as he understands that hes not the only guy out there. Ellis might make a good pro if he can change his attitude. But the rest we put on the floor are just complimentary players. Gurley doesnt even belong in the SEC imo. Hopefully these couple of bigs that are coming in are ready to contribute

I don’t disagree with that. Just more than frustrated with his development throughout the year, he didn’t come close to living up to expectations.
Hes just a super athlete that dominated his high school competition. Im frustrated too but its clear he didnt have support around him. Plus hes more of a true point guard than anybody on the team. A prototypical Russel Westbrook type of guy. He just needs to work on his shot. Turnovers will fade away with experience and confidence

Roll Tide and see you next year! I've been disappointed in the team since there was no January turnaround. I hope we have a better adjustment and growth this summer.

Or Ellis was telling them to calm down and not get a tech for arguing the call.
You’ll never have a team that’s tight, together and wants to be together when the coach blasts the players publicly after every loss.

Most of what you said are basic fundamentals that are taught in high school just like following your shot so if you miss you have a chance for an offensive rebound. The problem with yanking a player is you have to have someone as good as the guy that's getting yanked. The talent level on this team is not elite and most of the guys on this team did not play team ball.

I love to hear that following your shot. Go watch a good shooter and see if they follow their shot. When they know it’s off, they might take off which way they know it missed. But that isn’t something shooters do.

Basics need to be incorporated.

If you watched ND today, not a ton of athleticism comparatively but when they got the ball in the post or on the wing, they were so sound. Their post moves were textbook ( worked today and 30 years ago) and the wings caught the ball and were squared up in a 3 point stance.

If bama wasn’t elite, then how’d they win the games they won? They played hard on defense.

They have good players. The growth of this team stopped somewhere at the 10 game mark.

JD was the reason we were not blown out of the gym in the second half
I don’t know about that. He definitely helps with the run at the beginning of the 2nd half. Later in the game, he gave it all back to ND in turnovers and boneheaded passes.

I was most impressed with their screens. They ran their offense off screens to perfection.

Are you at practices? Because I've never seen a practice Rojas has dominated like you said. This game resulted from a few things. 1) #5 averages 8 ppg and hes got about 30 2) JQ is continually our best player deep down the line in close games. Makes a massive difference because now our best guard hands the ball of better than tom brady, his are just to the other team. This is what happens when you try to keep "good kids" from in state. In the state of alabama high school basketball is taught very different. Very low level IQ coaching. from MS to GA. It shows with most "top recruits" from these states.
Those home grown Alabama kids led us to our best season in years last year. It’s becoming obvious that they were probably the main reason for our success .

Sure did .. always seemed to be in the correct spot to screen our defenders and if you noticed when one of bier guards went off a screen , there was no light between the two guys meaning the screen and screener were close and that’s hard to Chase as bama player

whoa! Pearl defintely didnt fix stupid last year? He just went out and got the current #1 pick in the nba draft. Musselman? Where were they last year? Barnes? Yeah he didnt fix stupid last year? This is just the emotional response by southern basketball "experts" who don't grow up learning basketball. They don't know who else to blame.
Musselman was in the elite 8 last year. That’s where he was.

Wow! Why does this surprise me? This team just refused to put in any real effort. Zero leadership even though there were plenty of seniors (JQ, Ellis, Shack, Gurley, Rojas).
The team had multiple shoot arounds .. one the night before and one game day morning .. both voluntary .
Q showed up by himself then three players showed up day of .. still a poor turnout

Our guys don't even follow their shots when they are throwing up bricks and air balls, so I guess what you are saying is that we don't have any good shooters. Good shooters follow their shots and it's something that is taught when one starts to play basketball.

They are not elite hence the roller coaster season. Really good teams don't lose to the teams that this team did. The defense was not consistent at all and I agree when you watch our guys drive they take ill advised shots and make stupid passes.

Semantics ——>I guess elite is a bad term.. their ceiling was high but unable to stay there because of inconsistent everything 😀

Yeah, let’s start listening to some bum named Jeff Nadu wearing a silver chain. Gtfoh
I don’t care what his name is or what he is wearing, what he said was spot on. You don’t have to like it, but it hard to argue against it.

Sorry, but IMO, Nate Oats is no where near the worst coach in America? Not even by a mile.
Did he find the answer to this teams failures and bring this team together. No he did not and that is a key factor in being a good coach. But this team has problems deeper than coaching. JMHO though.
