Tuesday's practice report
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its fourth practice of spring camp on Tuesday, and for the first time players were dressed in full pads. Here are some notes from practice:
— Alabama's secondary worked out of the nickel package, giving us a first look at how the Crimson Tide might line up this season. Anthony Averett and Minkah Fitzpatrick were at corners, Ronnie Harrison and Hootie Jones played in the safety roles and Tony Brown was at Star.
— On the second unit, Deionte Thompson backed up for Harrison, Levi Wallace and Daniel Wright worked as reserve corners. Shyheim Carter and Kyriq McDonald were the backups at Star. The second unit wasn't a true second unit, as Minkah Fitzpatrick took reps with both groups.
— McDonald has been impressive so far and is an early enrollee to watch heading forward. Due to his size and physical nature, he appears to be a natural fit at the Star position. He's been practicing with the safeties during positional drills.
— Shaun Dion Hamilton (ACL) and Jared Mayden (hip) were both in black jerseys. Mayden remained on the stationary bike with a mask on, while Hamilton was participating with the inside linebackers at the end of the viewing period. Hamilton looks to be moving better than he was last week.
— Rashaan Evans led the inside linebackers and was followed by Keith Holcombe, Dylan Moses, Joshua McMillon, Mack Wilson and Shawn Jennings.
— Christian Miller led the outside linebackers and was followed by Anfernee Jennings, Jamey Mosley, Terrell Hall and Mekhi Brown.
— Early guess at the depth chart at outside linebacker would be Miller (Sam) and Jennings (Jack) on the first team and Mosley (Sam) and Hall (Jack) on second team.
— I talked to Miller's dad today. He told me Christian has been playing more at the Sam position and is working on improving his overall game, especially against the run. Of course, Alabama has multiple formations, so he could be used at various spots.
Notes from Hendo
-Da’Shawn Hand once again looked incredible during drills. Pro-Football type feet and was eager to hit the bag in drills. Joshua Frazier at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds keeps standing out during practice. Maybe it was just the one rep that I watched, but Raekwon Davis did not seem to be firing off on the football.
-Tight End Miller Forristall at 6-foot-5, 244 pounds made a big catch today, tuned it right up field and looked like someone with very dependable hands. Looked agile with big strong hands. Hale Hentges looked a bit slower and a completely different tight end compared to Forristall.
-Rashann Evans is everything you want in a backer and gets to the sled fast, just so powerful and established. Keith Holcombe is right behind him in reps and also catches your eye.
-Watched Irv Smith for a minute today. Working with the tight ends. Next in line after him was Ronnie Clark. I am interested to see how both are used this year and this spring for starters.
-Caught a brief rep of Alex Leatherwood. Really impressed. Strong push, huge arms, very powerful.
