Football 🏈 Breaking down Kalen DeBoer's three keys for Alabama against Georgia

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Knocking off the No. 2 team in the nation isn’t going to be easy. Kalen DeBoer knows he’ll need an almost-flawless performance from his players if No. 4 Alabama is going to stop a No. 2 Georgia team hungry for revenge from last season’s SEC Championship Game.

It would take DeBoer hours to break down what his Crimson Tide needs to do to beat the Bulldogs during this weekend’s top-five matchup inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. When asked for his keys to the game during his 10-minute appearance on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference, the head coach did his best to narrow Alabama’s to-do list down to three areas.

Here’s a breakdown of DeBoer’s main focus points heading into the matchup.

Hoops 🏀 What it means: How Chris Youngblood's injury impacts Alabama basketball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama basketball suffered its first significant setback of the offseason, as head coach Nate Oats announced Thursday that South Florida transfer Chris Youngblood will miss non-conference play with an ankle injury.

Oats said that Youngblood should be back to 100% by the time Alabama begins SEC play in early January. However, the Crimson Tide will need to find a replacement for the reigning AAC Co-Player of the Year in the meantime.

Youngblood is projected to be a substantial part of Alabama’s rotation this season. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound shooting guard is coming off a standout season in which he averaged 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 41.6% from beyond the arc.

Here’s a look at what games he will miss with his injury and how Alabama will replace him on the court.

Hoops 🏀 Nate Oats Thursday press conference

Oats said Alabama has to do a good job getting what they're trying to teach in without wearing the veteran players out.

Alabama had Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off and went hard today. They'll practice Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Oats: "It's nice to have six guys that have scored 1,000 points in their career."

Oats said Chris Youngblood has an ankle injury that was operated on. They are expecting him back to 100% by conference play.

Derrion Reid has a hand injury and is more week-to-week. Oats is hoping to have him back by the Wake Forest game.

Naas Cunningham has a groin injury and is day-to-day.

On having Cliff Omoruyi and Grant Nelson able to slide to the four: "We've got some different options that we're looking at for Grant to play the majority of minutes at the four."

Oats: "Aiden Sherrell can really shoot it and stretch it."

On Mo Dioubate: "Really good high school player. Took a little bit longer of figuring out our system.... he did a lot of things really well (last year), including his strength." said Dioubate has been getting better as a connector and has been in the gym working on his shot.

Oats was asked about Alabama general manager or a "Coach in charge of the coaches" as he called it. But he said he's "not gonna give up putting my roster together as a head coach." Also mentioned Preston Murphy's ability to recruit. Said Murphy basically fills that role.

Oats said Aden Holloway and Labron Philon have been better than he thought they'd be coming in. He said their additions will help keep Wrightsell and sears fresh and both players could be closing out games this season.

Oats said his team has a defensive mentality this season that was lacking at times last year. Early on that mentality drops off when the team gets deeper into competitive practices and they're continuing to work on mental stamina.

Nate Oats said he may have Nick Saban speak to his team at some point about dealing with outside noise.

Nate Oats: "We have great seasons when we guard people." Talked about Alabama's blue-collar emphasis

Oats: "Cliff's maybe the best rim protector in the country and we knew it." Said Alabama went and targeted him deliberately because the team "needed to make a big change." Praised Omoruyi's defensive instincts. Added that Aiden Sherrell's presence give Alabama a strong potential to be a great rim-protecting team.

Oats: "Our guards are doing a much better sitting in a stance and keeping (the ball) out of the lane."

Football 🏈 Live updates from Kalen DeBoer on Hey Coach

DeBoer said he felt like his team has been loose and is happy to see them not be tightened up as the week has gone one.

DeBoer said Monday and Tuesday of the bye week the players focused on school. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were practice days and the team had Saturday off. He said he was happy that many of his players were watching other games. Team practiced Sunday afternoon. Focus has been on getting mentally fresh. "Our guys have been going for seven weeks and this is week 8."

Football Recruiting Note on Justus Terry, other expected visitors from Georgia, Florida

Due to the impending tropical storm, Terry's game with Manchester High School in Georgia on Friday was postponed to Saturday. This means he will very likely miss the Alabama-Georgia game. Terry is expected to return to Tuscaloosa for a home game later this season.

We will continue to monitor the status of expected visitors from Georgia and Florida over the next few days. HS game postponements are happening elsewhere in Georgia which will impact things. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida) was scheduled to travel and play Central in Phenix City, but that game was canceled. Alabama OL commit Michael Carroll (who plays for IMG) informed Rivals that he will make it for the game if he's able to travel. Four-star 2026 safety Zech Fort also plays for the prep powerhouse and has plans to visit on Saturday.
