NEW ORLEANS — For the first time since August of 2021, the media was given a glimpse of Alabama’s practice as the No. 5 Crimson Tide worked out inside of Caesers Superdome on Tuesday morning ahead of its Sugar Bowl matchup against No. 9 Kansas State on Saturday.
Here are a few notes from the media viewing session.
— Starting Alabama linebacker Jaylen Moody had his right arm in a sling and did not dress out for practice. He spent the period on the stationary bike. Fellow inside linebacker Deontae Lawson was dressed out but was also limited. He had a brace on his left knee and rode the stationary bike while I watched him.
— Alabama defensive back Jahquez Robinson had a support strip on his hamstring. He was going through drills with the rest of the cornerbacks.
— Alabama's cornerback order was Kool-Aid McKinstry, Eli Ricks, Terrion Arnold, Earl Little II, Jahquez Robinson, Malachi Moore and Antonio Kite.
— Jordan Battle led the safties followed by Brian Branch, DeMarcco Hellams, Caleb Downs and DeVonta Smith.
— Injured defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe (neck) was not dressed out and was walking the stairs during practice. He was joined by inside linebacker Demouy Kennedy, who also wasn’t dressed out.
— Early enrollee Eli Holstein was throwing with the rest of the quarterbacks. Early enrollees aren't able to play in the Sugar Bowl, but he has an impressive frame for a true freshman.
— I believe Jalen Milroe might have just been having some fun, but the backup quarterback took a rep at wide receiver. He looked pretty good, too. Before everyone makes too big of a deal out of it, Milroe was wearing a black, non-contact jersey and also spent the period with the quarterbacks.
— Alabama's first-team offensive line appeared to consist of Tyler Steen, Tyler Booker, Seth McLaughlin, Emil Ekiyor Jr. and J.C. Latham from left to right.
— Darrian Dalcourt was dressed out but spent the period on the stationary bike.
— Early enrollees Caleb Downs and Brayson Hubbard were working out with the safeties. Downs was wearing No. 18 and Hubbard was wearing No. 27.
— Early enrollee Justice Haynes was wearing No. 22 and working with the running backs.
— I saw all of Alabama’s stars practicing, including Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr.
— It should be obvious, but offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was coaching the team despite being linked to the New England Patriots. He took an active role in practice, and the players seemed to respond to him well.
— As reported earlier, safeties coach Charles Kelly is still with the team after accepting the job defensive coordinator role at Colorado. Last week, Nick Saban spoke about how appreciative he was of Kelly for finishing “the right way.”
