TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama opened its spring camp Friday as players participated in their first of a total of 15 practices. Players wore shirts and shorts and worked outside under cloudy, 72-degree weather. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.
— Two of the three Alabama players suspended from the College Football Playoff weren’t present at practice. Backup tight end Kedrick James and backup offensive lineman Elliot Baker were both missing after violating team rules in December. Starting left guard Deonte Brown was also suspended but was seen working with the offensive linemen.
— Inside linebacker Ale Kaho was another notable absence. The sophomore is expected to compete for the starting role alongside Dylan Moses. Ben Davis was also missing from the unit after undergoing offseason surgery.
— Moses led the inside linebackers and was followed by Joshua McMillon, Shane Lee, Jaylen Moody, Trae Drake (walk-on), Joe Donald (walk-on) and Markail Benton.
— Shane Lee is the latest freakish freshman to arrive at Alabama. He has a really thick build and tree trunks for legs.
— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers and was followed by Terrell Lewis, Christopher Allen, Eyabi Anoma, Jarez Parks and Kevin Harris II.
— Lewis and Allen are both moving well as they recover from their respective ACL injuries. Both players were in red contact jerseys and wore braces on their legs.
— Outside linebacker Cameron Latu was working with the tight ends. We saw him reel in a sharp pass from freshman quarterback Lia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa.
— Xavier McKinney led the safeties and was followed by Jared Mayden, Daniel Wright and Eddie Smith. Shyheim Carter was also working with the safeties but was wearing a black, no-contact jersey and not taking part in drills.
— I didn’t get to look too deep into the cornerbacks. However, I did see that Trevon Diggs (foot) and Jalyn Armour-Davis (ACL) were full participants. Armour-Davis had a brace on his leg but was moving fine.
— The first group on defensive line featured Raekwon Davis, Phidarian Mathis and La’Bryan Ray. The next group consisted of Justin Eboigbe, Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore. The third group was made up of Antonio Alfano, D.J. Dale and Stephon Wynn Jr.
— I didn’t get to watch too much of the offensive linemen. However, I did see Alex Leatherwood work with the left tackles. He was followed by Scott Lashley and Kendall Randolph.
— To no surprise, Tua led the quarterbacks. He was followed by Mac Jones, Paul Tyson and Lia.
— We caught a glimpse of the specialists working on the far field. Freshman Will Reichard was working on his drops for punts. Reichard is listed as a placekicker on Alabama’s roster but served as both a kicker and a punter in high school.
— All seven of Alabama’s new assistants were in action. Newly-hired offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian was working with the quarterbacks as expected. Head coach Nick Saban was still working with the cornerbacks even though Karl Scott was assigned to the position this season. Charles Kelly worked with the safeties.
