Hurricane Debby

Hopefully everyone on here and their families that are in Debby's path, are safe and didn't incur too much damage. Living in Bluffton, SC we got 10 inches of rain on Monday and around 5 more since then. Supposed to continue raining on and off until Friday. Fortunately, where we live, the ground has absorbed all the rain. We have only had branches in the yard, but none on the house! Stay safe and good luck with the rest of Debby's storm issues! Roll Tide!!

Football 🏈 DeBoer's recipe for winning key in Germie Bernard's transfer to Alabama

“The recipe that he has of winning,” Bernard said of DeBoer. “I mean if you look at his track record at every school that he’s been to, he’s winning and they have a great offense that’s gonna get receivers the ball and be explosive. That’s something that I wanted to be in.”

Football 🏈 Alabama preseason nuggets (practice 6)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After spending the first five practices under the sun, Alabama moved indoors Thursday for its first full-padded workout of preseason camp. Players spent the media viewing period indoors but are expected to move outdoors later in the day.

Thursday’s practice marked the sixth of 20 preseason workouts leading up game week for the season opener against Western Kentucky on Aug. 31. Here are some notes from the viewing period.

— Let’s get our daily check on the offensive line out of the way first. Alabama’s first-team unit remained the same with Kadyn Proctor, Tyler Booker, Parker Brailsford, Jaeden Roberts and Wilkin Formby lining up from left to right. The second unit consisted of Naquil Betrand, Olaus Alinen, Geno VanDeMark, Roq Montgomery and Elijah Pritchett.

— I saw redshirt freshman Miles McVay taking snaps at left tackle. That seems to signify that he’s serving as a depth piece while Formby and Pritchett compete for the starting right tackle role.

— The new indoor setup allowed us to get a good look at the running backs. I’ve said this before, but freshman Daniel Hill is a big dude. He’s listed at 6-foo-t-1, 241 pounds and is built like a tank. I don’t necessarily expect him to get many reps this year behind Jam Miller, Justice Haynes and Richard Young, but he could be a dangerous weapon down the road.

— Miller led the running backs unit followed by Haynes, Young, Hill and Kevin Riley. The unit took part in receiving drills and handoff drills with the quarterbacks. Individually, the running backs took part in ladder drills with resistance bands pulling the ball away from them. They also worked on absorbing contact by running into assistants holding pads.

— Alabama performed an entertaining sideline drill with the receivers, tight ends and running backs. Players caught balls on the sideline and then had to hold on as they were nudged by a padded stick. From there, they had to dodge a rolling therapy ball on their way to the end zone.

— Wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard was very animated during the drill, yelling at pass catchers whenever they stepped out of bounds or got caught by the rolling ball.

— We got a good look at the wide receivers. Five-star freshman Ryan Williams moved well during all his drills but had a few drops during the viewing period. It seemed like on those occasions he didn’t look the ball all the way in and was focusing on turning downfield. Williams has shown off his hands several times during practice, so there’s nothing to worry about there. It’s just a good example of what Kalen DeBoer was referring to when he said Williams had to focus on the fundamentals.

— Germie Bernard led the Z receivers followed by Emmanuel Henderson, Rico Scott.

— Kendrick Law led the X receivers followed by Williams, Jarin Hamilton and Caleb Odom.

— Kobie Prentice led the slots followed by Cole Adams, Bubba Hampton and Amari Jefferson.

— Alabama's quarterback order continued to be Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Dylan Lonergan. Mack has consistently worked third in the unit after he was primarily seen as fourth in line throughout the spring. All quarterbacks threw the ball well. It's hard to really give a good scouting report when they aren't throwing against a defense.

— During one drill, the tight ends worked in groups of three with the quarterback. C.J. Dippre, Robbie Ouzts and Josh Cuevas were in the first group, while Danny Lewis, Ty Lockwood and Jay Lindsey were in the other.

— I believe we’ll be talking to tight ends coach Bryan Ellis as well as a member of the unit later today, so we should hear more about the position group.

Football 🏈 Everything Nick Sheridan said following Alabama's first full-pad practice

Nick Sheridan didn’t want to talk about the ice cream truck that pulled up following Alabama’s practice Wednesday afternoon. The first-year offensive coordinator is fully focused on the Crimson Tide’s preseason camp.

Following Wednesday's workout, Sheridan spoke with reporters for roughly 10 minutes. Here’s a full transcript of what he had to say about Alabama’s offense six practices into camp.

Football 🏈 Kalen DeBoer praises Jalen Milroe for recent improvement during camp

“I thought yesterday and today, he took the best steps I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” DeBoer said. “Really the way he’s intentional about coming out. Even not just what you say but how you do things, what your body language is. And he gets that. That’s important. But he’s actually just leading that way. And then it leads to him playing well, and the other guys just follow in suit.”

Football 🏈 Alabama preseason nuggets (practice No. 5)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After a day off Monday, Alabama returned to the practice field for their fifth of 20 preseason workouts leading up to game week of the season-opener against Western Kentucky. Players were dressed in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts under 87-degree weather for the practice. Alabama had a slightly new look, as players wore charcoal shorts instead of the usual light gray.

— Freshman cornerback now has a sizable black club on his left hand. He had a cast on it Sunday, but this is bigger. The new accessory didn’t stop Brown from leading the cornerbacks during drills. He even did his best to make a few one-handed catches on balls thrown his way.

— Alabama’s first-team offensive line remained the same from Sunday with Kadyn Proctor, Tyler Booker, Parker Brailsford, Jaeden Roberts and Wilkin Formby from left to right.

— The second unit featured Texas A&M transfer Naquil Betrand at left tackle with Olaus Alinen, Roq Montgomery, Geno VanDeMark and Elijah Pritchett to his right.

— Pritchett previously worked primarily at left tackle. Now that Proctor seems to have retained his first team, role, we should see Pritchett battle it out with Formby for the right tackle spot.

“We’re just rotating some guys,” DeBoer said on Sunday. “So I know you guys aren’t seeing all the reps and everything. Just rotating, especially at tackle. The three interior guys have been pretty consistent with the ones, but just working Pritchett, Formby and Proctor around. …They’ve all been getting their chance and all been continuing to get better and we’ve got plenty of time here but that chemistry for that unit’s going to be critical.”

— Defensive line coach Freddie Roach is fun to watch during drills. He gives a lot of feedback to his players and also has a sense of humor. After correcting Keon Keeley several times, Roach told the redshirt freshman, “You’re learning… on my nerves.” From there, Roach continued to work with Keeley before giving him a slap on the behind and sending him through another drill.

— I got a good look at outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson leading the Wolf unit through the zigzag drill. Robinson often uses Que Robinson as a coach on the field, having the redshirt senior demonstrate drills to his younger teammates. Que’s veteran presence has been really noticeable the past five practices.

Football 🏈 Motivational speaker Hunter Pinke speaks to Alabama

Alabama had motivational speaker Hunter Pinke speak to the team. Pinke, a former tight end on the North Dakota football team, suffered a spinal cord injury in 2019 that paralyzed him from the neck down. His speeches aim to inspire hope, tenacity, and the ability to find joy in times of challenge.
