TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its first practice of fall camp Friday. Players worked in shorts in 87-degree weather for the workout. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.
— Jalen Hurts led the quarterbacks during individual drills and was followed by Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, Kyle Edwards, Layne Hatcher and Braxton Barker. When I was watching the quarterbacks, Hurts was throwing to the tight ends while Tagovailoa threw to the wide receivers at the same time.
— Alabama didn't tip its hand on the quarterback battle. Because the two players split with the receivers and the tight ends, the order in individual drills doesn’t really matter.
— The wide receiver unit changed throughout, but for the most part Jerry Jeudy is working with the slot receivers and was followed by Chadarius Towndsend and Jaylen Waddle. DeVonta Smith led one of the outside groups and was followed by Tyrell Shavers and Derek Kief. Henry Ruggs III led the other outside receiving group and was followed by Xavian Marks and Slade Bolden. Xavier Williams worked at both slot and outside receiver.
— Bolden has a new number now. He is currently wearing No. 18 after wearing No. 29 this spring. He was also exclusively working with the receivers.
— Hale Hentges led the tight ends and was followed by Irv Smith, Miller Forristall and Kedrick James. Forristall was wearing a brace but did participate in drills and looked to be moving well.
— Damien Harris led the running back unit and was followed by Najee Harris, Brian Robinson, Ronnie Clark, Jerome Ford and Josh Jacobs. The order doesn’t really matter here, though. Josh Jacobs will definitely be a part of this offense.
— The first-team offensive line was the same from the spring with Jonah Williams, Lester Cotton, Ross Pierschbacher, Jedrick Wills and Alex Leatherwood lining up from left to right. Matt Womack was practicing with the second team and was moving well after breaking his foot during spring camp. Chris Owens was the center for the second unit with Josh Casher to his right.
— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers and was followed by Christian Miller, Jamey Mosley, Christopher Allen, Jarez Parks, Cameron Latu and Eyabi Anoma.
— Anoma comes as advertised and is one of those freshmen who make you take a second look. He’s a different breed, similar to how Dylan Moses stood out the first time we saw him.
— We saw Terrell Lewis walking into the weight room before practice. He’s wearing a brace, but he’s actually moving pretty well. I still think it’s doubtful we see him this season.
— Isaiah Buggs led the defensive line and was followed by Raekwon Davis, Quinnen Williams, Johnny Dwight, LaBryan Ray, Phidarian Mathis, Stephon Wynn Jr., Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore. Musika is a big guy, but he looks to be in good shape.
— Trevon Diggs and Shyheim Carter were the first two cornerbacks followed by Saivion Smith, Nigel Knot, Patrick Surtain Jr., Josh Jobe and Jalyn Armour-Davis. The order changed from drill to drill.
— The first two safeties were Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney. After that, it was Daniel Wright, Kyriq McDonald Keaton Anderson and Eddie Smith. It was interesting to see Smith as a safety as he was thought to be a cornerback coming out of high school.
— Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses led the inside linebackers and were followed by Joshua McMillon and Markail Benton. Jaylen Moody and Ben Davis were in the third unit.
